Update…Over one year out

So it has been a year out from injury (no surgery for me!) and I am slowly getting back to my regular activities.  I am able to run without pain, however, I am not up to my regular speed yet!  I think I’m too scared still!

My soleus does most of the work, so I went back to PT to help with building the gastrocnemius back up.  I’m doing more eccentric exercises to help with muscle building.

If anyone has any good strengthening exercise they’d like to share, I would love to hear about them!

    Congratulations on your 1-year anniversary! I’m only 14 weeks post-surgery and just starting to get back to a more normal life again. I’m no expert on exercises, but I have had a few conversations with my PTs about the difference between working the soleus versus the gastrocnemius muscles. What I’ve taken away from these is that calf exercises with the knee bent work the soleus, while the same exercise done with the knee straight works the gastroc. My PTs have me doing both seated (knees bent) heel raises (for the soleus) and standing (knees straight) heel raises (for the gastoc). Also, when doing the runner’s stretch, they have me doing them two ways–with knees bent (soleus) and knees straight (gastroc). Hope this helps you. -David

    As far as that AT goes, there should be nothing to fear. No guarantees about your OTHER few thousand body parts, of course! :-)
