Physical Therapy

Yesterday was day one of PT. The evaluation and initial treatment, massage, strengthening exercises, homework assignment took about 1.5 hours. I will be going twice a week for 5 weeks. I had been doing PT several months before my surgery so I was acquainted with many of the exercises, etc. My doctor had encouraged me to get my ankle moving as soon as the cast came off, so I was happy to find that the range of motion on my ATR foot was better than my non-operated on foot! However, the strength is another matter! I am ready to get walking in a normal gait. We are hoping that a dog adoption is around the corner and I want to be able to take “Daisy” for a walk in the neighborhood. I plan on trying a swim this weekend and am pleasantly surprised at my attempts on the exercise bike. Swelling is still a problem - I have added compression stocking to my Rest, Ice, and Elevation - It is helping some and the swelling at the base of my toes has really subsided. I overdid last Monday - went shopping for a bit - and don’t want to overdo again for a while! The swelling was much worse after that for about 24 hours. Anyway, I am enjoying being boot free - although I would not hesitate to put it back on if I decide to go to the grocery store! (or any other crowded place) Thanks for all the support, sharing etc on this site - it really helps! To any of you at the beginning of this journey, do not lose heart…it does get better!

I never understood why grocery stores (etc.) were always the WORST, but they were for me. I expected the shopping cart to help (by taking some weight), but no.

We are at about the same place. I had my initial evaluation on Wednesday. The gave me a sheet of 4 things to do for my homework: flexing the foot up and down, left to right, circles and tracing the alphabet. I’m going in for my first real appointment in about 45 minutes. I’m anxious to see what they have me do.

I don’t mind putting the boot on either for outings. I had to make a trip to Costco yesterday and definitely wanted the boot for that trip. Those shoppers have no mercy for anyone! They want their free taste of food so you don’t want to get in their way, lol.

You might want to try Arnica Gel for your swelling. I put this on and within about half an hour the swelling is going down. I love this gel! I even had my son in law try it on his back and he likes it, too.

Happy healing!

We are on the same schedule! I went again today. I don’t have that many appts approved by insurance so I try to make the most of each one, doing my homework diligently - but being careful not to do too much. I had quite a session today but was able to work on walking correctly the rest of the day…as I have limped about since March 2013 it is difficult to unlearn! I read one of your earlier posts about the Arnica gel and got some - it does help and I am not as swollen in the morning. I love this site for all the good info!

Hi Kathy. It is so hard to try to walk with the heel/toe. I am trying. I find if I walk slower I can do it better. I’m one of those fast walkers, though, and when I go fast, I limp. I’m going to work hard on slowing down.

I posted about my PT last night on my page. It was good. I’m going to do my homework faithfully, too. The more we help ourselves, the better we will get. It’s funny, every time you tell someone that you ruptured your Achilles, you get the look and “ooooh, that’s rough and going to take a while”. No kidding! I think we knew that, lol!

I’m glad the Arnica Gel is helping. I read something the other day about tension headaches and they even suggested Arnica to rub on the neck, shoulders and between the eyebrows. Said it was a muscle relaxer. I will try that next time I get a headache.

Keep up the good work!

Vicki

I can’t pin down when it happened, but there was a specific point where I realized I could walk fast without a lot of pain or stiffness. Probably about 8 weeks into PT. Going back to work and just doing my normal activities has seemed to help, too. Maybe more the confidence aspect.
