Encouraging blood flow?
Uncategorized September 28th, 2009When I sit around not doing much (i.e. watching TV or reading) to pass the time should I be encouraging blood flow to my achilles by not raising my foot but resting it on the floor? This obviously lets the blood flow down to the wound and encourage its healing? Sometimes my foot in the cast throbs but as I don’t feel I have any swelling surely the more blood in that area the better?
Appreciate your comments…
Thanks

Graham - Short answer is no. You will get more blood flow to the ankle, but it will tend to pool in your foot and increase swelling. You’ll want to keep the foot elevated as much as possible, especially during the first few weeks, to manage the swelling as best as possible. Try wiggling your toes around often to encourage blood flow. You can add in some leg lifts as well.

Thanks Tomtom. I don’t really have any swelling even when I am on my crutches. It does get a little uncomfortable after a while but overly painful. I will stick with wiggling my toes then and moving my foot around in the cast. Thanks
