no pain no gain

April 2, 2013 · 6 Comments

After going into work on Thursday, my ankle was in a lot of pain and it swelled up inside the boot. I can’t elevate it at my desk and I had a pretty stressful day, so I wasn’t too concerned.

By the time I got to the physio in the evening, it was so sore that I couldn’t let him touch it. He did the Thompsons test and I had minimal movement. He said I had probably overdone the excercises he had given me and to rest for the weekend. I’ve had it elevated and have used the heatpack. The swelling has gone done but it is still painful to PWB in the boot. I’ve got an appointment with the Surgeon on 9/4 but I hope it will improve before then.

Swelling all by itself does a bunch of bad things, including limiting ROM and increasing several negative symptoms. I had an ahah! moment from a shin bruise on my “good” leg that caused swelling in that ankle (gravity!!) that felt like I’d recently torn that AT!

Thanks Norm. I think it was definitely swelling that caused the pain and lack of ROM as it is feeling much better. After about 5 hrs of not being elevated it does swell and I feel the pressure in the boot.

My foot and the length of the scar are also going a purple/blue when it hasn’t been elevated.

I have been able to hobble in the boot without the crutches today which was pretty exciting. I will go down to 2 wedges on the weekend.

My ‘good’ leg has also been pretty stiff and sore in the tendon. It has made a loud crack a few times when I’ve gone on toes to reach something or jumped to get crutches. I’m trying to rest it as much as possible.

Thanks again for keeping in touch!

I’ve decided my swelling is linked to the manipulation the physio does. My foot has swelled up again and I can’t put weight on it. Maybe I need to break up with my physio haha. I like him.. just not what he does!

He has begun to push against my foot and has taken out another wedge.

2XU worked great for me, really helped keep the swelling down
