If I didnt have bad luck I would have no luck at all!

May 21st, 2015

haha. Just started drinking after my last doctor visit. The infection is going down as he is now using a wet burn dressing and it looks better than a few days ago. It was kind interesting to see him pull the dressing off and half the scab broke again dripping super red blood on the floor. What was really funny is he said that he needs to clean it up good so he doesn’t freak out the next guy! haha

This injury BLOWS!

3 month update…Why me? Why not!

May 19th, 2015

Went back to the OS and had him take another look at my stiches and when he removed the covering it ripped all of the scab right off of the whole thing. What a mess. He recovers it and gives me some antibiotics and tells me this is what he was worried about and then sent me on my way.  I cant begin to tell you how sad, frustrated and pissed off I am. Three weeks ago it looked great and he tells me to start full weight bearing with the stiches still in. I think something ripped and now I have to start all over. Back to the scooter!

11 weeks and 5 days and about to loose my mind

May 13th, 2015

Well we have all been there before. Today is one of those days. Been a couple of weeks since my last OS appointment. Looked at my stiches and said see you in a month. The only other instructions I have received was that I was to make sure I was off the crutches and to keep on walking in the boot.  Well as time has passed my wound has started to bleed a bit again. I really cant tell if its from the site where the stiches are or if its the wound itself. It is a bit more sore now that I am up and about all day and every day.  Just getting really worried that its not ever going to heal right.

Well that was the vent for the day and I hope tomorrow is a better one.

9 Weeks 5 days update

April 30th, 2015

Aloha all,

Been a little while since my last post and thought I would give you all an update. I have good news and some not as good news.

First the good news is I went on the trip to Guatemala and it was fantastic. I left NWB and came back home FWB! The early part was a bit rough but I pushed through. You all were absolutlyu right that the going from PWB to FWB was mainly mentally getting over that I cant really hurt it in the boot.  Still using the crutches when I know I have a long walk to so its not all good but good enough.

Now the bad news. My stiches are still in and the wound isn’t completely healed yet. I am going to the OS later this afternoon for him to take a look at it and see what he thinks. Have any of you all had an issue with this?  9 weeks is a long time. I am not sure if this matters but the surgery was on the inside of the ankle and not directly behind like most of you.

Thanks for the help!

Feel like I am going to hurl!

April 11th, 2015

haha. Did some partial weight bearing with crutches this afternoon and man that’s a workout. Sweating bullets and think I am gonna hurl. Nothing like a full body workout!

What a great day!

April 8th, 2015

Aloha all,

Well today was the first day that I got the boot on correctly. After looking at a bunch of videos and reading a bunch of blog posts it turns out the boot was on wrong. The first issue was that my heel wasn’t all the way to the back of the boot! Thanks Donna for that video yesterday. The next thing was I wasn’t rocking correctly in the boot heel first.  I am also using the insert and a pad in my heel for some support and then put additional padding next to the surgery site.  Today I walked around with at least 50% weight on it with no pain at all. Man I am soooooooo happy right now!

Just an FYI my surgeon is very concerned with the stiches healing correctly and I still have mine in 7 weeks out but they look fantastic.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Hopefully final boot question

April 6th, 2015

Aloha all,

Here is the boot that I was prescribed:

http://www.ossur.com/injury-solutions/products/foot-and-ankle/walkers/equalizer-air-walker

Ossur Equalizer Air Walker

Its been bugging me for a few days so I thought I would call the manufacturer. It looks like the boot doesn’t have wedges and wont fit any others from this manufacturer. Just really strange how everyone else on this board has had wedges but me.  I am able to put on the boot now pretty comfortably and did some 30% or so PWB with no pain yesterday so I think all is good but I have no idea.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Six weeks and 1 day at a time!

April 5th, 2015

Aloha all,

First off I cant express how helpful you have all been with this whole process. I am a bit of an over reactor and I also like to know all information available to be to help me get through this.

As for my recovery this has been one up and down week. Got the cast off on Tues with no instructions at all on how to use it. Spent that last 4 days doing some flexing of the foot and wearing the boot from time to time to get used to it.

Today I felt that six weeks was good enough for me to try and do some PWB with crutches. Not sure how I feel about this whole thing again. I put some weight on it and not pain really it just feels really strange. What is most interesting is that its my outside of the ankle that I can kind of feel it but the tendon part feels fine.

Just going to take it slow for the next two days and not use the scooter at all if I can help it. Just need to get used to kinda walking on this thing.

Any tips about the next two days I am all ears.

Thanks again and talk to you all again soon.

NWB to Partial Instructions please

April 3rd, 2015

Aloha all,

Well as you all know I have not received any instructions at all from my OS. I knew going into this that his bedside manor was a little bit lacking but chose him anyway because he is such a good surgeon.

With that being said yesterday I was able to get into the boot and just used some of the padding under it on the heel as a wedge. I did do some very very partial weight bearing on it as this was my first time in it and was kinda freaked out by the whole thing.

Man was I tired last night after hobbling around in the afternoon on crutches. Its 80 degrees here and I was sweating bullets just getting from the car to the restaurant!

What is really strange for me is now that the cast if off I am actually a bit less comfortable than before. I have no muscle left in my calf so if I cross my leg to work under my desk after about 20 min it starts to dig into my good leg!  One thing after another with this injury!

Ok now the good news.  After getting around a bit yesterday I had no pain at all in my foot or ankle. I even had a little bit of a stumble on the bad foot with the crutches and but a little more weight on it then I had been. No pain no issues.

The question I have is how do I go from where I am no to full weight Bering in the best way possible?  Just put the boot on and take what I can take?  Should I be not using my scooter anymore at all?  I have a couple of meetings this morning and sweating bullets before it is not something I am looking forward to.

Is this a good thing to follow?
