Uh-oh, in pain again

Trying not to panic….but was shocked to wake up Thursday with stiffness and pain in the post-surgical foot. Ran hard on Wednesday night, felt fine…and have been feeling fine for months. But woke up with that all too familiar stiffness and limp.

So far icing, ibuprofin, and stretching with the splint have helped a bit…but have not run at all for a few days. Swam instead….which also loosened it up.

Does not feel like a re-rupture…but more like something is out of alignment (much like it did shortly after I first began walking after surgery/cast/boot…for a few hours on Friday, I could even walk normally for a while….But yes, I’m scared…if it doesn’t improve soon, of course I’ll get it checked out. Sigh!!!!!!

    Hey, if you ran hard on Wednesday and then had some stiffness on Thursday, it may just be soreness from the pounding you gave it the night before. If it has since gone down and swimming has gotten it better, it hopefully should be okay (it sounds like it’s okay). Try not to be scared, I know that’s easier said than done, but after injuries like these everything we feel in that foot gets us scared, I’m the same way and it’s something that I’m working on (we all are).

    You say you ran “hard.” Intervals, perhaps? This is the sort of thing that if you aren’t used to doing it will make you sore. I remember that years ago when I was running quite seriously the first couple of times I did intervals I was in some serious pain for a couple of days after. I only wanted to do intervals twice a week but it took me about three weeks before I could do them without pain. Overdoing it rarely hurts at the time, it is almost always the following day or days. I did a hard, because of strong wind, 33 mile bike ride last Saturday and then on Sunday my wife and I went for a 10 mile hike. Monday was definitely not a good day and my usual 20-25 mile lunch time ride was only 18 miles at a much slower pace. Tuesday I ran but I was slower and it hurt pretty much the entire 2.25 miles. My legs felt like lead and my injured Achilles was fairly sore. I finally just laid off Thursday and Friday and did a 46 mile ride today at a decent pace. You overdid it and after a couple of days off you should be fine. But, if you aren’t you better go see someone.

    I posted elsewhere about a recent bone bruise to my “good leg” shin, that made that ankle and foot swell and turn purple. I was shocked at how similar the ankle discomfort and stiffness reminded me of what my “bad leg” ankle felt like during my recent ATR recovery. I swear the “good” AT felt like it was complaining! It’s been completely 100% since I recovered from post-ATR surgery on that “good” side 7-ish years ago, so I’m pretty sure the explanation is just that general inflammation — even if (as in my case) it’s caused by a bruise way up higher, whose inflammation is “draining down”! — makes things feel stiff, sore, weak, and fragile or at risk!

    No guarantees that I’m describing your situation, but don’t rule it out prematurely, either.
