Setback…bursitis?!?!
So I haven’t read about anyone getting this on their road to recovery so I thought I’d ask. Anyone develop Bursitis in their heel after going to full impact and 100% activities? After 3 PT sessions at full strength I have developed a lot of pain in the heel of the recovering leg. The pain is the worst on impact and also pushing off. my PT shut me down over the weekend and because it wasn’t any better, they did some ultrasound and another electro shock thing with an anti-inflammatory medicine to soak through. They haven’t officially diagnosed it as bursitis, but because it isn’t getting better they are leaning toward it. Anyone with any experience with this??
I haven’t noticed that diagnosis, but LOTS of us had hypersensitivity under the heel, and some developed plantar fasciitis =~ heel spur. Rest, squishy footbeds or shoes (Crocs), and gently rolling over a tennis ball all usually help.
Seconding Norm on the heel sensitivity. A grain of sand under that heel felt like stepping on a boulder. It does toughen up with time but at six months, the heel of the recovering leg is still more sensitive than the other. Have you tried gel heel pads?
My PT called me tenderfoot because of all the heel pain. I had it bad enough wear it almost brought me to tears some day and no matter what I did, I just HAD to sit down, I couldn’t take it. Even at 5.5 months, I still have it, but not as bad. Plenty of ICE helped me. On the bad days I would use a cooler full of ice water and dunk it. Don’t use just ice, it’ll hurt where it hits the skin.
Right now, I’m using a Dr. Scholls Custom Fit insert that I had to stand on the machine to get the right fit. Word of caution - the machine has you lean kind of far forward, on to the front of your foot - so be careful. I’ve been jogging with them and have had less heel pain and less knee pain from impact. I forgot them one day and could really notice a difference. I’ve also heard good things about “Superfeet” insoles. Both of those aren’t cheap though at 50 and 35 respectively. Heel pads are about 10 bucks. I hope it’s not bursitis and just some soreness that will get better with time - keep us posted.
I had this as well. 3 weeks into PT it is much better. One thing that really helped was freezing a small bottle of water and rolling the bottom of my heel over it after activity. My physical therapist recommended this - said to do this until the area is numb. I could actually feel crunchy stuff breaking up in there, and then it would feel better after. I know this thread is dead, but this seems to be a common complaint after going to FWB, and reading everyone else’s comments and advice have helped me so much, so I’m paying it forward!
Thanks for paying it forward Janis - I am still in the boot, just trying to go from PWB to FWB after a long time NWB and am having a bit of trouble with heel/sole of foot pain. I’ll give your ice trick a go.
