Day 4…A little worried about my flight.
As the warm weather peeks its head, I sit on my couch on this sunday morning, looking at my big ol’ casted leg and my messy apartment and get a little down. Im thinking about the whole production Wednesday will bring when I try to get on the plane to leave for Vegas. Its a little scary cuz usually I just walk on up. Now I have all this excess baggage…Any tips on handling this? I am going to call the airline on Tuesday to hopefully speed things along. Until then the whole packing thing will be easier…I only need to pack one shoe!!! Thats just weird!!! So today I’ll be working and hitting the grocery store with my hands-free crutch. Should be interesting. I feel like a monster, and Im going to scare all the little kids lol. Well I will update you all on the outcome of all this! Have a fabulous sunday!!!!

For sure call the airline! And maybe Homeland Security, too.
Another blogger here (chocolata, I think) was told that she could only fly on her booked flight if she were in a boot or a removable cast, so it’s not a slam dunk for you in a “real” cast.

I’m with norm on this one…check out my comments on chocolata’s blog site. The airline decides who boards and who doesn’t and rules and regulations vary between airlines.
I suggest you ring them to get a ruling, and either ask for email/written confirmation or get the full name of the person you speak to. Airline call centres don’t always get it right, but once someone “official” gives you a ruling, then the airline are obliged to stick by it. (I could bore you with legal refs here…)
For what it’s worth, I’ve heard of two people trying to fly in a “standard” cast. One had to have it removed (My cleaner’s daughter) and during the flight the bone started to reset wrongly, and the other person kept it on but experienced tremendous swelling during the (three hour) flight. Personally, I’d be less than keen, when there are other options available.

Hi Faydra,
My handle name is chocolata. As mentioned in the two comments above, I have flight booking and have got a written confirmation from the airlines (KLM) that I could fly with them if I was in a cut cast or in a boot. According to the airlines’ web site, patients in a cast are supposed to submit the Medical Clearance Form signed by their doctor several days before their flight, but I was told by KLM that it was not necessary for Achilles tendon rupture patients in one of the aforementioned two types of protection.
As both normofthenorth and Coolkiwi have suggested, the best thing to do for you is to get a written confirmation from the airlines.
One thing we should remember here is that even healthy legs can suffer swelling during a flight. I won’t be on board in a standard cast even if the airlines told me that they would allow passengers to fly in a standard one!
Take care!

Yikes, I never even thought of the extra leg swelling from the lowered pressure! I’ve thought of the effect on the little air bladders in an AirCast boot, but not on the leg itself! Ouch!!
You have to find a flight with lots of empty seats, so you can rest your leg on top of the seat in front of you, whenever the seatbelt sign is off. Yikes!
