Just Say No to Beach Volleyball

Another 4th of July on My Favorite Beach in Maine

… or was it? Two days before the much-anticipated 4th, I was on Pine Point Beach, enjoying my third novel that week, thankful that I was so fortunate to be able to relax on this gorgeous stretch of sand in Scarborough, Maine.

Little did I know how much my life was to change with one little question: “Elizabeth — Will you & Billy join us for beach volleyball?” “No thanks,” I begged off,  “You guys have fun!”  “But it’s husbands vs. wives … you have to play!” our friends and neighbors cajoled.

What could it hurt? A little friendly, three-on-three competition, right? Ten points later and I was down for the count. Who had beaned me with a fast ball? Why was I lying face first in the sand? Thus began my ATR journey …

Welcome to the club, you will get lots of advice on this site, but rest and elevate, dont try to push it there are many stories of re-ruptures, take it easy for the first month at least, My doctor told me tortoise and the hare (dont know where he got that from he is Thai) I live in Thailand but originally from the UK so its a different treatment process here.

Thanks for the good advice, Karen. I am definitely fully immersed in the rest and elevate stage. Biggest challege for me is the dependence on others. From the other stories I’ve read, I feel lucky to have short-term disability for 3 months, a very caring and attentive husband, and two cats who keep me company lounging all day. If I don’t focus on these very important things, I end up having a good-old-fashioned cry about what a nasty turn of fate this spur-of-the-moment decision was. The irony is that I’m usually a sports fan and spectator, not a participant, which is probably why this tear happened. I consider myself to be in good shape, primarily due to being on my feet all day in retail and generally living a healthy lifestyle — but in hindsight,I definitely should have been more proactive in staying fit! Maybe that will be another benefit from this unexpected turn in my journey … thanks again for the good wishes!

Hi Elizabeth -

Welcome to the club! My mom is from Old Orchard Beach [to answer your question Kevin - Pine Point is a stone's throw away from OOB] and I’ve spent many summers up there visiting grandparents and other relatives. My mom wanted me to come up for my post-op recovery, but I needed to be closer to work. :) Anyway, glad you found the place. Dennis has put together a great tool for us.

Thanks Kevin & Sheila — Yes, once you discover Pine Point/OOB it’s hard not to keep coming back. We have a little cottage on E. Grand Ave. which we rent out for most of summer, but try to enjoy ourselves as much as possible. Sorry you couldn’t do post-op with your Mom, Sheila, but understand the work necessity. We have another Pine Point trip planned for end of August, so hopefully I will be at least PWB by then. I am lucky in that I am only a week + 3 out of surgery, but I am luckily in boot (vs. cast), so am doing minimal exercises already. It helps mentally if nothing else! All I know is that all requests to participate in beach sports will be met with a firm NO this time round — but my doc assures me that I will be fully cleared to participate in next year’s beach volleyball tournament!

heh - I should connect you with my mom when you are back up there. She can caretake you since she can’t do it for me. Give her that ‘nursing” outlet. :) That’s a great place to hang out while recovering. We’d sit on the screened in porch enjoying the cool nights people watching all the folks going to downtown OOB. You never knew what you’d see or hear on weekends. it wasn’t unusual to have men step into gram @ gramp’s hedges to relieve themselves. Gramma always talked about getting a spot light and shining it on them. :)

I might just take you up on that, Sheila! Pine Point is a little quieter than OOB, so I don’t have any stories like your Gramma’s! How’s your recovery going by the way? I have a doc appt tomorrown and hope (fingers crossed) that my stitches come out. I am dying for a REAL shower. I am just a day short of two weeks post-op, feel much better, but my primary caregiver (hubby) just went down with the flu today (uh-oh!) and all my old instincts for “nursing” him came back full force. Slight problem … still can’t “do” much of anything! We are quite a pair today!!
