Triathletes - Help!

I am beginning to train for my first (mini) triathlon and would like to garner some advice from the pros.  I plan on competing in an event some time in 2009.  I am now working on my swim stroke given that this will be my weakest portion of the event and this is the only area for which I can train right now.  What advice can you give a 47 year old beginning tri-athlete?

Wow! What a great idea (assuming the trainee advances slowly and steadily!). What a great way to motivate yourself!

Go for it! I finished my first two Sprint-Tri’s this spring, and they were so much fun. I did one April 13th, then my 2nd April 20th, then ruptured my tendon 3 days later - playing tennis (my right leg too:-(. I am 11 weeks post-op, and have been able to ride my bike on a trainer for a few weeks now. I am hoping to get back to swimming too. Running will be a much longer wait. My goal is to get back for Spring 2009. I turned 40 this year and decided to give Tri’s a try - and I don’t regret it. My advice to you is don’t give up, keep doing what you are doing - and let’s look forward to next spring!

Great stuff. Triathlon/duathlon is the greatest sport out there. I’ve been doing this sport since 1995 and was supposed to compete in my 14th Ironman a few days ago but I’ll have to wait until next year due to my ATR.

I currently coach a few athletes. A few completed their first triathlons a month ago and now love it. Most people are worried about the swim but it turns out being the easiest and least painful part of the day. Don’t underestimate the bike and run. A solid winter of swimming should get you up to a good level to compete. There are a ton of sites out there but this one is a good one to start with. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/

Enjoy. You will love your triathlon experience.
