The race is on … Richard vs. the Turtle!!!
July 26, 2008 by drahcir61
After a long 16 days after surgery I finally got to see my surgeon’s craftsmanship on Thursday when they removed the original post-op wrap. God that felt good for my leg to finally breathe, if only for 20 minutes! Metal staples & no signs of infection, not unlike most of the other pics on here.
I chose a nice blue cast, my wife says it will go well with our household decor & considering she’s taking care of my every need, I’m not about to complain … blue cast it is!
So we’re eating lunch today at the breakfast table which overlooks the backyard & we noticed a turtle crawling thru the grass. When i was a little kid growing up outside of Boston I spent my summers catching turtles & frogs & snakes (& anything else that moved) so I was kind of intrigued to watch him slowly crawl thru my backyard (ok, I was bored!). I also thought, hmmm how fast is that turtle? You know, I’ve mastered the crutches after 3 weeks … maybe I can’t walk the dog right now & maybe I can’t play tennis but surely I’m faster than a turtle, right? Right??? Mammal versus reptile … race on.
Ok, he’s quicker than he looks … put him on crutches & I bet he’ll lose a step or two. Next time I will be ready! Is he gloating??? If he didn’t have such a long neck this race would’ve been a lot closer. He is gloating … damn!

dude. Thats classic. i’m still laughing. I’m down for the count today… resting and elevating since its been an active week. Your post definitely makes my day. So many jokes….
Glad it made you laugh! ATR recovery isn’t easy for any of us but think positive & keep your sense of humor … you WILL get better!!!
I’ve been devouring everything on this site for the past couple of weeks and the “Richard vs. the Turtle” pics and your captions are by far my favorite post so far. I about laughed myself right out of bed!! Everytime I complain about how slow recovery seems to go, my husband reminds me “Slow and steady, slow and steady, don’t you remember the tortoise and the hare?” Well now I finally get it!
Laughter truly is the best medicine … thanks, Richard, and here’s wishing you a speedy — er, successful! — rehab!
Best wishes, Elizabeth
P.S. Forgot to mention that I loved the big “YES” on your first pic, too. Can’t tell you how therapeutic it was to wash my “yes” off, since mentally I was still screaming “No!” For me, another good milestone in moving forward!
Richard - You’ll beat him next time!
Wonderful contrast! Also, I like your long, strong handsome leg. Is the other one just the same? We ATR victims seem to be mainly a sporty bunch, except me.
I’m on the plump side, and very white, so no pictures of my leg here! Unless, mirabile dictu, I suddenly snap into great shape after months of this ATR… unlikely.
Its a inspirational blog to me Richard inspire me a lot he used his time and keep busy yourself in his tough time. i hope you are fine at this time.
You will be fine with time.
