it’s back…..

i think this might be a major milestone

December 22, 2009 · 5 Comments

so this morning at physical therapy, i was doing single calf raises.
everyone there, even some other patients, gave me a round of applause! i remember when i was hobbling into pt on two crutches barely able to even move my foot.

i’m still walking with a very bad limp, but it has been getting better. if i walk any more than two block my leg gets tired, and i can feel my achilles working overtime. i hope this eventually goes away with time

Being able to do a single leg calf raise by three months postop is much earlier than most. Calf strength is usually what takes the longest of the major rehab components. I have a feeling you are going to make very fast progress over the coming few weeks.

It is odd to have that much calf strength, but still have a significant limp. Is the limp from limited ankle flexibility, or something else?

    Best wishes,

i’m positive the limp is from limited range of motion.
the therapist took some more measurements today to send to the surgeon. pointing up- the injured side is almost even with the good side, i was 3 degrees off on some protractor. pointing down was another story i was about 12 degrees shy of my good foot.

my concern was with pointing my foot up because i had a distal rupture, and a little bit of the tendon was lost.

    thanks for the encouraging words

Don, you are definitely off the beaten path! ROM usually comes back before strength, and it is usually dorsiflexion (toes up) that is the hardest to normalize. Nevertheless, I think you are in great shape, as you have made more progress toward what are usually the harder goals to accomplish, hence my suspicion that you will be making fast progress and soon.

I agree with Doug, it appears you’re off the chart. Have you been working with a weight machine on calf strength?

since i’ve been going back to the gym (about 3 weeks now) i have been using calf machines. i haven’t been doing anything to strenuous, just a lot of reps.

i’m a month out of my procedure to clean the wound from the first surgery, and it’s almost healed up. it looks a lot better, and still no infection. the only inconvenience is going to see the orthopedic every week because he wants to keep an eye on it.

thanks again for everyone’s encouraging words, they are much appreciated!
