Catching Up

Published by doryt under Uncategorized

A quick update on my ATR (achilles tendon rupture). I surpassed 100 days on Jan. 12th. Trying to look at everyday like a vacation. Injury 10/5, surgery 10/14, cast off 11/29. PWB (partial weight bearing) on 11/04. I have only been FWB (full weight bearing since 12/15 with the cam boot and started PT on 12/29. On Jan. 11th went to no boot and FWB. I do not have much gait yet and do have a major setback with an open wound. The tendon does not have much if any blood supply and the ankle does not have good circulation, even in the healthy of us. Even though I RICE’d (rest ice elevate) often this open wound issue is a complication that can occure. Why me??? On Jan. 19, I had a consult with the surgeon who will do a skin graft and that in itself is about a 6 week ordeal. The wound prep is next friday 1/27 and called an Integra Placement. The material is a matrix made of bovine collagen and shark cartilidge. This gets the area to granulate so there will be something for the skin graft to adhere to. Then back to the couch next week and NWB (no weight bearing) for 3 weeks. Better dust off my crutches. Then I have the skin graft around 2/24. graft should take within 2 weeks. Then I start all over with PT. Moral of the story…. Foam roll, rest & stretch everyone and do not over train. I know I will come back 100% even though a long process.

Fine Tuning

Published by doryt under Uncategorized

I am just wondering how many of us are still fine tuning some motions and movements after 1 year. I am at 60+ weeks now and once in a while some issues pop up out of know where. Yesterday we ran for time and I was so stiff and sore this morning. Have ran for time 2X since my 6 month mark. Hmmm wishing for 110% recovery, NOW.

14 Months 7 days

I went in to have surgery on 12/05/12, for debriedment and irrigation of my AT repair. I had a full rupture tendon reattachment with tendon graft jacket. Really the time has just flown by since my injury 10/05/2011. I had no idea that my surgeon does not use disolving sutchers. Like I had posted in August that my wound healed, it still didn’t look at all that great. I just wanted to be done withe them! So I waited it out and went back to Wound care 09/15 when they removed a tiny piece of sutcher. Wound care Doc was so hesitant of slicing open my new skin but I told him if he didn’t I would.  I healed good but it was still a little bit inflamed. So I sent pictures and called my surgeon that did the repair and he had me come in. I had no idea that he did not used disolving type sutchers. Sure enough 2 rather large knots of sutchers were working their way out. He explained that he alignes the AT fibers and whip stiches the ends together and tucks the knotted sutchers inside the graft jacket. The stiches stay as the AT reattaches itself. So I went back to NWB and crutches for a week and get the stiches out 12/19. Alas I think I’ll be done! So with that said I am going to email elisabeth and make her an offer on my Vacocast boot. Take care all and happy healing.

Wound is Healed

Published by doryt under Uncategorized

I am now at 43 weeks and finally my would has closed and I have skin! I am so so happy to see marklewis’s post that he achieved a successful wound closure at 10 weeks post op.  Doctors orders “Go Surfing”! I had not been to the beach all summer. Just too much to endure not being able to get wet. So this week I will be packing the truck for a camping trip to San Clemente State Beach. My injury has taught me alot about myself and it is all becoming a blurr. I have been back to XFIT 3 days a week and contimue to improve.

Not Melting Down Yet

Published by doryt under Uncategorized

Not sure why my recent msg to Mitch posted on Johns. Sorry guys canb’t figure it out. I have appointment next week with the Kaiser Fontana Wound Clinic. I have looked all over this Blog and the web for anyone that has had issues with their incision not closing. I am remaining positive but at my wits end. Any comments anyone? I do not have infection or pain or anything other than a hole the size of my thumb nail between back of heel and ankle bone that simply will not skin ovewr and heal.

Surgeon Visit

Published by doryt under Uncategorized

Well I have a followup with my surgeon tomorrow. He will most likely order some plastic surgery for a skin graft on my incision. Due to a PA not putting steri strips on the incision when the temporary cast and stiches were removed on November 04. I developed a gaping hole near the ankle bone. It is not skinning over and very little to no red tissue. Has anyone experienced this?
