Hey I’m just wanting to know if anyone has the thought I’m having! I have moved to the boot now and enjoy taking showers like a real human is suppose to, but I’m concerned right now! When I get out of my RoboCop Boot, I ask my wife to do that test they did when we first find out our tendon is ruptured. When they squeeze your calf muscle to see if you have any movement in your foot, and I still have no movement…… Is this normal???and should I see movement later on after the physical therapy starts? I’m just asking because I still se the dent in my leg where the tendon was ruptured, but I am praying this doctor fixed me up cause I may ask for another Sonogram or what ever i need to see it, but I’m somewhat worried!

Hi, i never actually thought to ask this. I also had the same problem when i started walking again. I was also concerned, even asked my husband to check it for me. We gave up trying and i just asked my physio. She explained that the tendon is in tact but because of swelling and the operation in itself the area will never look and feel the same again. She even said the area will feel like a gap when in fact the tendon is in place.. If you are concerned though the physio should be able to feel accurately whether tendon is secure and in place..

Thanks for the information, I’m just not set up with a phisio just yet, and here in Bermuda where the healthcare is not how can I say it…. Top Notch like the US! But I will pray about it and just rest and continue that all is well and move forward!

Have your wife try the Thompson test with you lying on your stomach, ankles hanging off the bed.
Hope this helps!

Sometimes after surgery, during the early parts of.your recovery you will exhibit a weak thompson test because of the atrophy. At least that’s what my physio and doc told me. Its also a hard to test do yiurself acurrately.

we had surgery 1 day apart and its the same for me too. my calf is very weak. i was told to focus on stretches by pulling lightly and holding with a towel. i managed to stretch from 25 degrees to neutral in a week and was cleared for Partial weight bearing.
My problem so far has been shooting pains on my heel. Doc told me its my plantar tightening back from being flax in the cast. before my injury i had plantar fasciitis but not this bad. i massage my calf and foot and it helps alot.

If you haven’t tried sitting and rolling your foot over a ball (tennis?), many of us have found it gives relief.

I was informed that chances of an incomplete repair or re-injury (that you were not absolutely aware of) at stage of removal of boot are very very unlikely. Although tendon is very tight, as others have noted, the muscle atrophy - as I also personnaly noted - offset that and resulted in very weak response. I agree with above - focus on flexibility and be patient in getting that response you are looking for.
Heel pain! Very present for me. Seemed so bad I thought I had done something wrong. But seems this is part of the tightness in tendon and point of attachment post surgery. It goes away! At week 22, I still get some soreness in the heel but it is going away. When in the boot, as lifts were being removed I added a heel cushion to reduce impact on heel during daily activity. Didn’t stop the heel pain but helped.

I make a total distinction between heel pain UNDER the heel and heel pain BEHIND (& near the top of) the heel. The former is almost universal and not very scary. Not to be ignored, but it usu resolves itself with some squishy insoles and massage over a ball and time. It rarely blossoms into plantar fasciitis.
But the latter heel pain is usu a sign that the healing AT has been pulled too hard. I think the proper response is to back way off and wait for forgiveness, and try hard to stay below the intensity level that brings that pain back. With time, you should be able to forget about that pain, even with 100% effort to muscle exhaustion. But not soon and certainly not now.
