5 Month Update

January 30th, 2015 | Uncategorized |

Time flies when once life starts feeling normal again. I’ve been on a break from my formal PT since the first of the year while I deal with new health insurance. I’ll probably go back for a session or two so they can close up my case and report back to my OS.

I can’t think of any milestones since my last update. I think I’m still on the same, relatively flat improvement trajectory. I haven’t had any setbacks due to pushing too hard. I’m pretty much able to participate in everything that I could pre-injury, although with a little caution and still a noticeable loss off power and pop on any jumping or push off type movement. I am also still very cautious with any landing type impacts that force dorsiflexion and rely on my weakened calf to help absorb the impact.

I’ve noticed a big decrease in swelling in the last month. I have no restrictions on any shoes or boots. I can fit into and climb in even my tightest rock climbing shoes.

My affected calf is still slightly smaller and my scar is not so good. The bottom 2/3rd is hypertrophic or keloid-like. I have been using silicone scar sheets and that seems to have helped flatten it out. Fortunately, it is not sensitive and doesn’t get irritated by rubbing on any of my footwear.

  1. Hi nice that you are recovering well. I am 12 weeks post op..did you feel a pinch in your achilles at around my timeframe when walkiNg or doing heel raises?

  2. I remember feeling a stretching or pinching sensation when I started to increase the load on the tendon. I wasn’t painful, but I tried to manage my exercise load to not push it too hard.

You may also have some scar tissue that could account for that sensation.

Remember there is no falling behind. Your going to heal at whatever pace your body allows.

  3. I ruptured my achilles playing sport in nov,2014. Close to 4 months, since my surgery. Almost done with 20 PT sessions, so far. As of now, I am able raise my heel both feet or even just affected calf as well.
Although my limping is minimal, but when I do stretching i feel bit tightness.
Now that 6 months for you, do you have tightness or back to normal ?

    thanks,

  4. I still feel a bit of tightness especially prior to being warmed up. Just today I was hiking up a moderate slope while keeping my heels to the ground. I noticed quite a bit more tightness in the affected leg. I still have quite a bit of a deficit in strength too. I’m still gaining strength, at a faster pace than I noticed before, probably because I’m able to return to an almost normal activity level. Good luck with your recovery.

  5. Did your doctor recommend the silicone scar sheets? I’ve never heard of them before.

  6. Yes, they were recommended by my surgeon. She used one on a small, raised scar on her leg and proudly pulled up her pant leg to show it off. I think they are also big with the C-section crowd. I used the ScarAway brand. The reviews are mostly good, but it seems that they just don’t work for some people or some types of scars. Good luck.

  7. Thanks!
