Update.
This morning I was standing in bare feet, shifting my weight forward and back, hanging onto the counter and rolling my foot up as directed by my PT, and my husband said, “Why not try it in shoes, just to see how that feels?” So I did. And let me tell you, IT FEELS GREAT. And I know I said I wouldn’t try and walk without the boot, but then I took a step. And another one. And then I started crying (happy tears). Now I’ve been doing slow and careful laps around the kitchen, and showing off my scrawny, walking leg to my kids, our tenant … anyone who will pay attention. I’m going to go finish my home therapy now (towel scrunching toe move, scar massage and vibration with the handheld massager) and then I will put my boot back on and go grocery shopping.

Yahoo! I am dancing (with CAM boot and Crutches) in NC for your accomplishment. Congrats and I would keep the CAM boot on for grocery shopping. So far, the grocery has been one of the most “deadly” places I go…..
…but then I took a step. And another one. And then I started crying (happy tears).
AWESOME! Congraultaions… I would be crying happy tears too! So now you know, you can do shoes:-). I might tell myself I deserve to buy a treat– like um, ice cream with chocolate sauce– at the grocery store!
See — this is why I love this place. Only other ATR sufferers would get why it’s a big deal for me! My husband was giving me a pretty funny look when I was tearing up. I did wear the boot to the grocery store, Alice; you’re right, I do need to be careful. And Polly, I took your advice and had an ice cream!
I still have no idea why grocery shopping is so tough with a recovering AT! I kept thinking that the support from a shopping cart would make it easier than just walking, and I kept getting EXHAUSTED by the time I was through!
And your last note — “Only other ATR sufferers would get why it’s a big deal for me!” — is spot on and very important to the success and value of this web-site, IMO!
