i went away for the day yesterday and had to fly so the plaster was split for my journey, i returned to hospital today to have the plaster changed i also moved my foot up ahead of my final ‘plaster’ appointment next week. I am now at 70 degrees so 20 degrees short of 90.At 5 weeks and 4 days post op, does this progress sound about right. I got the impression i’m not as far up as they would like at this time? I find it very tight at the back and painful to move up today especially across the front/top of my foot anyone else experienced this? I was trying very hard to move it up any tips on what i can do to help myself loosen my foot before my next visit. thank you

Just wiggling and spreading your toes. There’s not a whole lot else you can do at this point. The unfortunate thing with an injury like this is that not only is your achilles immobilized but so are all of the muscles in your feet, ankles, etc. I’ve started physical therapy and quite honestly it hurts my foot and ankle more than my actual achilles. Once you’re in a removable boot, you’ll be able to do toe circles and a little stretching. That tendon is like an old car, you gotta get her warmed up!

Was the plaster split due to swelling during travel (either since it can’t be elevated or other issue?). My injury occurred in San Jose, CA and 9 days later I flew home to Houston, not realizing the extend of my injury and 2nd only to the original injury, that flight was quite uncomfortable. It was just in a brace, but throbbed the entire flight.

Hello Dancer,
I do hope you get back to Irish Dancing, I tried it when I was young, but was not good enough went for lessons because my mother (who was Irish) was a fantastic Irish dancer. I just remember always hurting my ankles!! Incidentally my mother-in-law (who is now 92) used to make the dresses for our local dance group, just remember the incredible weight with all those sequins on them.

I really do hope you will be able to get back to dance, you are very young so you have an excellent chance of a complete recovery.

Hi, just curious about the flying part. I’m only 11 days PostOp but was told I shouldn’t fly due to fear of deep vein thrombosis and other complications.

Did your doctor split your cast? Were you given any blood thinner medication for the flight?

Thanks.

hi
i flew 6weeks post op and my flight was 50mins going/returning on the one day. Sorting out a dancing dress. My plaster was split on the friday and returned on the tues to have the plaster changed, more likely they will fill the split again (using the saw they split it either side). I did not take any medication as it was such a short flight and quite far post op. I have read other blogs where people have taken longer flights. It depends on your doc and confidence flying so close after the op. 2 weeks post op i was meant to fly to milan and i was not allowed to travel because of the dangers of DVT. good luck with your recovery
