crossfitmike’s AchillesBlog

Recovery is going well right now. I’m slowly getting muscle back in my left calf and I’m feeling better each day. I still can’t do a one-legged calf raise, but I’m working on it. I was finally able to do a light jog, but with a bit of an awkward stride. I’m normally a forefoot/mid-foot runner and I found myself heel striking. Walking around is pretty much normal, but after extended periods of time or after a night out, I get some stiffness, swelling and a bit of a limp. I ice it when I can. I’m hoping that this problem will eventually go away with time.

At this point, I’m back to doing all the normal routines and movements for CrossFit and all the sports that I play. I was able to do some jump shots with my son over the weekend. Obviously, strength is not nearly where it was pre-injury and balance on the injured side still remains an issue. Mentally, I just have to keep reminding myself to be patient with the healing process. I actually did box jumps the other day (the exercise that caused my rupture) with confidence.

I went through 10 sessions of PT and it helped out with the swelling. To date, my range of motion has been back to where it was pre-injury. I have a follow-up with the doctor tomorrow so I’ll see what the next steps for me are.

You are brave for doing box jumps Mike! I have been doing step ups on the box but will be scared to do normal box jumps for a long time I think…..

I should have clarified. I’m able to do box jumps. I just haven’t done a full WOD of box jumps. For the time being, I’m scaling with step-ups.

    Hey Mike,

I am a fellow CrossFitter who ruptured the left achilles during box jumps back in Mid-June. I’m 2 months post-op and I am about where you were on your July 01 post (just started PT). Looking forward to reading more about your recovery because I can relate and since you are ahead of me in the healing process, I can see what’s to come for me. On my website - beastmodaldomains.wordpress I did a post about overtraining and my injury titled: WODaholics Anonymous. You may enjoy it. I’m not linking it because I don’t want this comment to be marked as spam. Cheers!

Hey man I read some of your blogs on your website and was laughin my ass off. That is some funny shit man. I too am a hardcore crossfitter, and ruptured my achilles in May doing box jumps as well. I am sure you are walking around in a boot and close to getting back in two shoes if you haven’t already. It sucks man I am at 14 weeks since op and still cannot run or jump too well. Long process I guess. Good luck with it man.

    Nick -
Sorry to hear about the injury. Shit sucks. I am now 12 weeks out. Ditched the aircast two weeks ago and physical therapy is going great. Walking gait has normalized and my Doc will assess me in two weeks to start jogging. I’ve never wanted to run so bad in my life. Glad you are enjoying my website, keep checking it and tell urryone at your box. New posts every Wednesday.
