1 week since op.

Hi folks

I came across this website while looking for advice on recovery from ATR, its a week today since my operation and I must say I feel a lot more optimistic than I did this time last week, I thought my running days were done.

I’m a 40 yeard old male from the UK and I snapped my achilles while playing soccer, it didn’t feel too bad at the time, I had to quit the game and I drove home, I drove to work the next day but I realised something must be wrong because of the pain I was in, I went to see my GP and she informed my that I had ATR and sent me straight to hospital.

The doctor at the hospital put me in plaster and sent me home told me to come back on monday.

I went back on monday and had the operation, that was last week and I’m not sure what I should be doing, at the minute I’m off work laid in bed all day with my foot elevated, how long should I stay like this?

Before the rupture I was going to the gym 3-4 times a week doing cardio and weights, I also played soccer once a week.

I have decided to stop playing soccer altogether but I want to get back to the gym asap, even if it’s just to do upper body weights, could somebody please let me know how soon I could be doing this?

When I was in hospital I wasn’t given any advice to when I will be able to go back to the gym or exercise, hopefully somebody will be able to help me out.

Many thanks in advance

  1. Hi, this is a comment.

  2. Post-surgery you should be in bed for 10-14 days with leg elevated. Eat, Drink, use the restroom, but for the most part you want to just allow yourself time to heal. The Doctors office should have told you to come back in to remove the cast and see if its ok to take the stitches or staples out. Then you will go into another cast for anywhere from 2-8 weeks.

You shouldn’t think about hitting the gym till at least after the stitches or staples come out.

  3. thanks for your comments jink122, more or less been doing as you said for the first 12 days, stitches are coming out on monday (hopefully).
I’ve read comments from other people about having a boot fitted, is this instead of the cast and if so how soon could you have one.
Will probably be starting gym late next week, depends on what doctors have to say on monday.

As to when you will get your boot, it seems to depend on the doctor and your condition. Some here have gone straight to the boot from the cast. I went to the boot after 4 weeks in a cast. Some have gone longer in a cast before they got a boot.
