Post Op 7 weeks + 2 days - Freedom!

Braveheart has been on HBO recently.  I wouldn’t necessarilly say it is one of my top 10 movies of all-time, but I do really like it, so I’ve watched bits and pieces of it for the past few weeks.  Mel Gibson’s last word as WIlliam Wallace is when he yells out, “Freedom!”

Well, I felt like yelling that out a few minutes ago myself.  I was ready to head back to my office from the restroom, and I thought, “You know what, you can do this without crutches.”  So, I held them up and walked the whole way, ~200 feet, back to my office with no support.  Wow, what a great feeling, walking without crutches.  And the best part about it was that it took me a good 2-3 minutes, so I had plenty of time to enjoy my new Freedom.

This is the best day of your recovery. Seriously. THIS is IT. Soak in the warm feeling of it until your fingers get all prune-y. Very happy for you.

Nice going, Craig. I like when he yells: “I am William Wallace!”

Thats why it was even harder watching him jump around in women’s control top pantyhose in What Woman Want.

OMG…I have been watching Braveheart & Gladiator around the clock lately…The “Freedom” analogy is a classic Craig…However I have to give a very slight edge to William Wallace over U since I believe he was being dis-emboweled at that moment…Just slighty tougher than an ATR injury…LOL !!!

You’ll be running around the office in no time. I bet the driving is going great huh?! No more sticking your head out the window like a dog going on car rides anymore. Great job! :)

Chilidog, where’s the love? Yeah, ok, I suppose Wallace had one on me there.

Kristin, unfortunately, still no driving. Hopefully, in another 2-3 weeks, so I continue the dog routine.

It’s hard to believe how quickly I’ve got here. 1 week ago I had almost no ROM. Wednesday was my first day where I tried walking with only one crutch. Today, I just realized I could ditch them completely. It’s amazing how quickly the initial walking comes back.

Congrats on this milestone! It does feel great, and I will say Braveheart is one of my top 10 movies. I loved the analogy.

Does anyone have any hip issues with having the leg off balance? My casted leg is sitting up kind of high on the cast and walking boot — I wear a thick heel on the good leg, but I am off kilter and things are starting to hurt. Any advice out there?

I have to say, though, it is a bit frustrating to be sooooo much slower than I was on crutches. Thanks to all the posts from people ahead of me, I’ve really focused on the mechanics of how I walk, which I’m hoping will speed the full recovery process up.
