The boot sidles sideways down the side walk (free of the cast and 8 weeks/ 6 weeks postop!)

I’m 5 days in the boot and having far too much fun with my partial weight bearing status. I am embarrassed to admit that it took a full 2 days to discover that it is much easier to walk sideways in a boot than straight forward. Now, I frequently move sideways rather than trying the clomp - stop - slide that the boot seems to require.

Does anyone have any videos of graceful movement in a boot?

Things that suprised me with the boot: I can easily move around without crutches, and it doesn’t actually hurt. I do start to hurt if I go without crutches for more than 15 minutes. I knew in theory about the atrophy, but I swear that that beanstalk is NOT MY CALF.

Well, after 8 weeks of waiting for surgeons and the body to do their thing, it feels like I’m on the road to recovery and making progress at last.  I’m looking forward to bulking that calf back up. Physical Therapy starts tomorrow …

In the meantime, i’m going to go enjoy yet another cast-free ablution.

* In case you don’t know what a boot is, it is a removable rigid boot that immobilizes my ankle at 90 degrees. You can also walk in it. Those are the joyous key pieces of information: you can remove and you can walk in it.  My boot is an FP Walker Aircast Foam Pneumatic

Hello Cliff,
You and I are at about the same point post -op and I’ve got the same aircast boot as well.

Do you get any pain across the top of your foot if you wear it for a longish period?

I’ve still got some swelling there and it’s a bit uncomfortable after a time, I wonder if I’m putting a bit too much air in the front air pocket.

Richard

PS - The air-cast gets lots of admiring looks when I’m out and about, it’s the best one !

Yeah, the top of my foot hurt for the first 2 or 3 days. I forgot about that. Baths and wiggling of the foot helped quite a bit. Maybe it was just other muscles and tendons that were stiff from 7 weeks inactivity - they don’t hurt anymore. I think my air cast leaks, so I certainly don’t have too much air in it.

I have the same boot and am really experiencing pain on the inside of my ankle. I broke my ankle and am now 2 weeks in this boot. It seems to be rubbing or something and I can not get it comfortable. My physio guy said is not a fan of this boot…bad design. I am trying to find one that is more comfortable, if it’s out there.

Hey everyone, I am new to the club…
I just had surgery 9 days ago on my left achilles tendon after completely rupturing it playing soccer. I’m 29 years old and not as active as I used to be…just a weekend warrior. I would just like to point out how uncomfortable this has been. They put me in a splint after the surgery, with the hard portion of the splint going from my mid calf to my toes on the back side of my leg. I’ve been off the pain medication since day 5 and I only take the Naproxin for inflammation. For the past few days I have been getting a burning sensation on the bottom of my heal after a while of elevating, and today I can’t seem to stay in one position without the entire side of my foot feeling numb and tingly. I wonder if this is just the nerves coming back to life, or maybe the splint is too tight. Either way…I am extremely uncomfortable. Does anyone else have this problem?

By the way, this website is awesome to read. Thanks everybody.

Popouch, I am 2 weeks post-op and experienced the same problems while wearing the splint. It improved drastically once I moved into the boot a few days ago. I think it is probably a circulation issue. I could alleviate some of the discomfort when I loosened the splint a little bit, massaged my toes, and applied a damp (not too wet!) hot towel to my toes to help improve my circulation. I hope this helps you. Best of luck!
