First Ortho followup post tear

Saw the Doc yesterday afternoon and he took a quick look at the ankle and said that the tendon was filling in nicely and that I had excellent range of motion.  He gave a glance at the PT report and told me to crank the boot down to 20 degrees this week and 10 degrees next week and then 0 degrees or neutral in two weeks. OK to put weight on it.  OK to sleep without it.  New PT orders with a directive toward strengthening.  I do believe he said that when I see him next (at the end of February) that I will be good to go.  Now, that could simply mean go without the boot but I got the strong impression that he was intimating that I would be released from care with the exception of maybe ongoing PT strengthening.  Wishful thinking?

  1. Careful what you wish for — as long as you’re making steady progress, your OS’s work could be done, or s/he could stay interested in the rehab… Your leg may not care much.

  2. I would think 10 weeks is a little early for goodbye unless you have been through this before. I needed a little more hand holding. I think it’s likely goodbye to the boot and hello to two shoes. Either way, it sounds like you are in good shape!

  3. Thanks for the replies.

Actually, I am just thrilled with the progress on this non-operative recovery. I definitely expect that 12 weeks will be the signoff just as with the left one. I am being super cautious but also persistent with exercises and directives. What makes this one seem so much better is that I am not dealing with an external and internal wound. No scar, no adhesions, no infections or skin inflammations and zero pain. What a difference that makes. I’m still pretty sure that surgery was the way to go with the first one because of the severity of the injury but I definitely feel I had an option with this one.

Had PT today and started with some strengthening such as seated heel raises while applying downward pressure from my arms(for the soleus). Also added green theraband to loop around affected foot and exercise gastrocnemius.

I have a pile of books and Netflix. I’m running my business from a laptop and an iphone and my wife is driving Mr. Doofus.
