All’s well, except that heel aggravation
Okay, I am at 11 weeks, post op and all is very well. My ankle feels good, the scar has healed, I can walk without a limp and I am playing golf 2 or 3 times a week.
There is only one problem.. While most of my ankle/achilles has improved rapidly, I seem to have stagnated with regards to the aggravation at the back of my heel. I have one pair of shoes (running shoes) that feel good and don’t bother me, so I am good working out at the gym with no issues, but these running shoes don’t look too good with slacks. I have been trying different dress shoes, but they all seem to aggravate that heel area. I tried a wide band-aid to see if that would give me some extra padding, but it really didn’t do much good.
Anyone at my stage of healing or beyond me that has dealt with this? If you have overcome the heel aggitation, please tell me what you are doing or did. I am very happy with my recovery except for this one thing that drives me crazy! I figured I just have to be patient, but it doesn’t seem to get much better on a day by day basis. I thought about coming to work in sandals or barefoot, but I doubt that this would go over very well with my co-workers.
Thanks for any advice, in advance..

Is your scar on the very back of your heel/ankle? Mine hasn’t bothered me at all but my incision was just on the inside of my ankle, my doc specifically cut it open there to avoid irritation later when back in shoes.

Nick: No, my scar/incision is off center from the very back of the heel. I am not sure why there is irritation there, with dress shoes. My repaired Achilles is definitely thicker than the good one. It may just be the Achilles being close to the skin and still healing. It’s my only real pain, and it is aggravating.

Hi Chuck,
So happy to see how well you’re doing. All the way along you’ve been braver than me (driving, shoes, etc.), so you’ve helped me gain the confidence to get back my mobility. Thanks for that! About the heel irritation — I have it too, and while I found Dr. Scholl’s blister pads to offer some relief, the thing that really helps is to switch up my shoes every day, so that the pressure is always falling in a slightly different spot. Also — and I plan to mention this in my blog post — many people here spoke of Crocs as being the only shoes that were comfortable. Though I had sworn years ago that I would NEVER be caught dead in a pair of them, I went to check them out at the weekend. I’m tired of being held back by uncomfortable shoes. I am happy to report that they have basic, even stylish options, for women and men. I bought a woman’s flat slip-on, and admired the men’s very cool, slip-on loafers in black, brown and khaki. The ones I saw were canvas, and might be too casual for work, but on the website (www.crocs.com) I see they have them in leather. I have to admit, they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn, and right now feel much better than any other shoe I own, including my running shoes. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but as I type this I have been checking out other styles on the website and thinking about ordering a different pair. Ha!

Perhaps you have “planter fascitiitis”. Its a pain on the heel of the sole of the foot. Soft inner soles will not fix it. Roll the sole of your foot over a tennis ball to stretch the ligament on the bottom of your foot. I cured mine by doing this and other stretches I found on youtube. Fixed it in no time…had to as the pain became unbearable.
