I didn’t really understand what I had done until my surgeon looked at me and said that Chauncey Billups, the LA Clippers guard, had torn his Achilles and was still in a boot. Staring blankly in either denial or shock, he looks at me again trying to hammer it home a little harder “season ending injury.” I had thought it was a light sprain!
I was playing basketball, doing some crazy Dirk Nowitski fade away, made the basket was fouled, winning the championship game. Haha that’s a lie, just the fade away part that was pretty sweet, but I landed and felt a pop and was sure that one of the guys had thrown a basketball at the back of my heal. When I asked who did it, they looked at me like I was nuts. I limped out of the gym and went on with life.
A few days later, my foot still hurt but I was RICEing it and was determined to play in our basketball tournament that Saturday. My friend hurt herself that weekend so I went to the ER, and thought since I was there anyways maybe I’d get an X Ray. I walked out splinted and on crutches and a diagnosis of full Achilles tendon rupture.
I had surgery in the US where I go to school, but have come back to Canada to recover. As soon as I got here I got good news, no more cast and I’m in a boot and I can FWB on it! I love my boot. I can carry my own coffee!!! I had adapted and could carry it when I was non-weight bearing but it was a bit spilly.
Anyways the countdown is on. 2 months until I can worry a bit less about re-rupture.
