I am sure you don’t want to hear this but hang in there. There will be moments of despair that we have to go through. This is a very challenging time….such is life I guess.

I am 2 weeks into this ordeal and all I want to do is play soccer on my team. Plus the weather is amazing UGH… I am sure I will have a melt down along the way, when that time comes, make sure PICK MY ASS UP!!!

I’m only just in week 3, so have another 2 weeks 6 days before my solid plaster is off.
I managed to get a lift into my office job so can stay immobile most of the day (although just had a meeting the other end of the building and am now shattered after crutching it all the way there and back). I consoled myself yesterday that it is the noughties as pre-ninities in the UK we had 4 TV channels and no internet.

i know exactly how you feel ( take a look at my post week three) it happens to us all but it will pass , focus on the fact you will recover some people are less fortunate as we are . im nearly 9 wks post op and the last 3 wks have been amazing . ive gone from pwb to fwb to no boot indoors my physio starts tomorrow but i feel i only need it to strengthen my calf . i do get swelling after being out all day . my surgeon said it was the worst tear he has had to repair he must have done an excellent job for my recovery to be so quick . i had visions of being laid up for 6 months !!!!!!!!!! im looking forward to going back to work in 3 weeks and mostly swimming which is the one thing im not allowed to do ( incase i slip ? ) so dont feel down , your recovery may just come in leaps and bounds (pardon the pun )good luck and quick heeling x nerys

Previously I posted in June ‘I think ‘Im cracking up’ which I thought I was at the time. But, do not despair it will improve. Your lucky presumably because you are taller than me (I am only just over 5′ tall), we have a bike at home and I have to ask my husband/son to get me on it to cycle, but I can only just reach the pedal with my bad leg even with the seat at the lowest level.

I try and do some every day but not sure if trying to pedal without being able to put the whole food on the pedal is a good idea really.

The Olympics has been great, even though I am in work I am watching live cycling on BBC. We went to watch the World Cycling Chapionships in Manchester in March when I first hurt my leg and before I was diagnosed with achilles, so I was hobbling about the velodrome.

Keep your chin up good times will come again…

Yeah dude, you can’t complain when you live in LA. It’s been hot here too but try paying a visit to this neck of the woods (Toronto area) in 4-5 months in the snow and bitter cold.

Here in ‘rainy’ Manchester we have had the central heating on in the office for the last few days, crazy!! We are hoping the sun might stay with us today as my hubby has tried for the last few days to get to watch Lancashire Cricket club play but we have had some torrential rain, and more predicted for the weekend.

Don’t want it to be scortching hot, just a nice summer temperature where I could get out into the garden sometime.

I can’t believe you guys are complaining about the heat?!
It’s August 7th and it’s rained off and on here (just outside Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK) for about a week and I’ve got cold toes!

At least I won’t have ridiculous tan-lines I suppose.

I can relate to that. I get home from light duty @ the unACed lifeguard staiton,and ac is like a drug. Let me tell you, N FL in August is HOT. Not to say that LA isn’t , but our humidity is legendary. I am thankful I can can take off my boot for a minute or two. Stay cool. Matt

I’m up here in San Francisco and Oakland, and it’s been a very blessedly cool summer. I wonder, would it be better to have this injury in winter - but then it’s raining, so that’s hard, too. You can have the heat down there in LA!

I had similar experience when going to watch Manchester City Football Club, they provided me with a disabled ’seat’ but luckily for me I had borrowed a wheelchair to get me there.

The Club did however, bring an ordinary chair so that my husband could sit next to me, also the view from the disabled section was fantastic.

Wish you could do mine for me, we bought some special radio/turntable/cd player thingymajig that is supposed to put your old vinyl, cd’s etc. onto the computer. Half the time it just doesn’t work. Even when you shout at it it still doesn’t work. Given up now, will keep old records even though they are just collecting dust.

I have had a major triumph for me as well, I mowed the grass on Saturday and cut some hedges, but, I’m exhausted as here in what is commonly called ‘RAINY’ Manchester the sun is cracking the pavements, its hot hot hot.

daveleft, i live near santa monica but i’m stuck at kaiser cadillac (west la). thanks for the suggestion dancer, but fear of cramps prevents me from trying (my calf was pretty cramp prone pre-injury). my calf is so small now! i have to tighten the boot a little more everyday!

Chowder, I can sympathize with the “shrinkage”. I get mad everytime I take my boot off. We’re pretty much at the same stage. The shower thing scares me though. Plan on sticking mostly with the “Cowboy Shower”. LOL

I got told by PT the only visit i had to PT on the day my cast was removed as i tore my achilles again the next day when i fell, so back in plaster. Muscle starts to waste away within 24 hours after not being used so after weeks there is going to be a rather odd looking chicken leg this shocked me also. A sports therapist friend of mine told me i can do calf muscle pumps when you basically tense your calf release 15 reps of this 3 sets. Check this with your doc 1st though i don’t want to give anyone wrong advise. Apparently it helps with muscle wastage

I saw that you were in early PT and was wondering if you were at SMOG (Santa Monica Orthopaedic Group) too.

I’m going to a wedding in August. I don’t think I will participate in the Chicken Leg dance.

I was assigned PT at Day 16, which I believe is considered Week 3 (0-7 days is Week 1, etc.). Btw, which ortho group do you have? I am over at SMOG.

dont start too early. follow doctors and pts orders to the dot. u dont want to push it and cause a re rupture. god knows weve had so many this summer.

dont worry about your calf at the moment it happens to us all . as for pt im 5 wks post op and been told not to do anything and no weight bearing … so not sure every case is different as for boot mine is also hanging off ……….got apt on 22 nd so hopefully new boot or cast…… good luck x

The scooter at Target by my house is by far the most powerful out of Wal-Mart, Lowes and Dicks Sporting Goods Target is my store of choice since it has the fastest scooters.

I would love to have had a ride on one of those, but, as I cannot drive a car I was worried I might bring down all the displays.

You look as if you are going to enjoy yourself over the next few months.

I took a great home video of me shopping in a cart at Wal Mart..I think we all have been there

highlight of my week going shopping been to 2 different supermarkets and found out which one is faster so sticking with that one hee hee ….keep smiling xxx

i think it depends on what type of work you do .

if it is laborous and physical - you might need a lot of time .
if its just desk jobs - you might need to go back sooner .

some peole need the $$ that they cant afford to be out of work and had to go to work with this injury.
