The Cast is OFF round two - on the road to recovery.

Got the cast off today. The scar looks great. You can not really tell another surgery has been done. I am using the same boot as before and being very careful today and a few weeks. PWB with crutches. My foot feels very strange, worse than last time. I am having my kids taking turns rubbing Daddy’s foot.  I have a long way to go - more atrophy than last time it seems. Hopefully the first tear had extra time to heal at the same time. Feels great to be out of the cast as you all know. The heal if very tender and more pain in my ankle than I remember the first time. No real clear direction on protocol from the doc. I will begin the basic ROM exercises and slowly build back.

If anyone has any advice on rehab that has worked for you please share. I want to start riding a bike with the boot in a few weeks and get back to PT.

Chip -
Congrats on PWB. Glad to see that you are starting to hit those milestones in your recovery again.

I’ve updated your “Achilles Profile”. Which city are you in by the way?

Please Checkout: http://achillesblog.com/rehabilitation/physical-therapy for information on physcial therapy, ROM exercises, etc.

I hope it’s useful, and keep us posted on your recovery.

It has been eight weeks since my surgery. PT is slow but has started the foot to move again. PT makes me pick marbles with my toes -move them from left of towel on floor to right side of towel. I also have to do my ABCs with large toe. These are just two of the 20 or more things that PT makes me do 3 times a week and then do them a home.I am still in boot but was told to find some shoes with a cowboy heel to take to doctor next week for approval to wear. Still have pain in heel area where boot has caused a large blister that has been there for three weeks.

Great progress! Did the surgeon use the same incision from the first repair?

Your foot has been through alot - it does not seem surprising that it feels worse than the first time. But it will start feeling better, and I am sure you will see that with each passing week.

I have a doctor who does not want PT before week 10 or 11 so I have no PT info to offer. When I got into the boot I just did gentle ROM exercises — such as the alphabet, and flexing forward and down. It was so tight at first but got better each week.

Good luck - keep up posted.
