14 1/2 weeks (non-surgery) update

Here is what I can do: walk and jog without pain in sneakers; ride the bike; perform dual calf-raises with ease; ride the bike as fast as I could prior to the injury.

Here is what I can’t do: single calf raises that are fully extended; walk in dress shoes all day without feeling some discomfort; convince myself that I have any business being on a basketball court.

I did PT for 3 weeks and found it to be mostly a waste of time. My physical therapist is a great guy but I don’t like paying someone to watch me do exercises that I can largely do at home. I currently spend about 15 minutes, 3 times a week, doing various PT exercises at home or at my gym. I had set a personal goal of being able to play basketball by July 4th weekend, but I don’t think I can come close to pushing off my injured leg like I would need to in order to run, cut, jump, etc. All things considered, I’m not complaining. It seems unbelievable that my injury occurred only 3 months or so ago.

Sound slike you’re doing really well to me. The calf raises will come just need to keep up the two legs. Try up on two down on one that really helped me. My physio reckons when you can do 15 you’re pretty much ready for anything!

Don’t know if it is a basketball mentality, but I am doing almost the same thing as you did some weeks ago (I just read back through all your posts). I am two and a half weeks in, with a non-op basketball-induced full rupture. Apart from the initial shotgun-to-the-leg pain, I have not been in any real discomfort since my leg was stuck in a vacuum splint to get me to A&E. So I started experimenting with a bit of weight last week and have pretty much ditched the crutches for getting round the house. I have been in an boot from day 3. I have the same ‘if it don’t hurt, it can’t be bad approach’. The only adverse effect is the sore ear I have got from my wife telling me not to rush it all the time.

I could never dunk to start with, but the rest of the things you want to get back to, I want too. Good luck, heal well and keep me posted! Going to follow you closely (at a distance of about 12 weeks).

liverpoolass - thanks for the tip

danair - i don’t regret ditching the crutches early, but keep in mind that my full rupture was (a) near the calf and (b) treated with a prp shot. it’s possible that both of those factors are meaningless, but i just wanted to throw it out there in case you re-rupture based on following my stupid lead.

Thanks for posting those points. I wasn’t following your lead as such - I was on that path myself anyway, and I have got (a) in common with you.

I’m going fast but not too fast (I hope). Will keep following your progress though…
