1st Day Post Op

Hello Everyone, There is a lot of great information here, sure glad I found you guys.

I am a 46 yr old male, I completely ruptured my Achilles tendon playing soccer on Oct 28th, I had surgery yesterday Nov 2nd. So today is my first day post op. I have been taking pain meds every 4 hours since getting home. Even after having leg elevated & taking the double doses of VicodinĀ  that my Doctor suggested It was still painful at times. From what Ive been reading this really bad pain only lasts a couple of days? Any input would be much appreciated.

The more you can keep the swelling down the better. I’m three weeks out and my pain started to subside after the first week, although I still take some pain meds in the evening. I felt a lot of numbness in my toes for the first week also, which started to go away after day 6 or 7. There are plenty of well-informed folks on this site who can give you a large amount of info. Sorry I can be more of help, since my doc has me on a
very conservative treatment approach. Anyway, our recovery will run pretty close together so keep up the posts and I hope your pain gets better an becomes more manageable soon. I wish you a good recovery.

Good luck with your recovery. My pain declined after the first week. I am back to work and try to keep my leg elevated. Sometimes I have to take one pain pill in the evening if I have had a long day without elevation. Make sure to drink lots of water and eat prunes if you can stand them. I think that is a very important part of taking pain meds.

We are on a very similar recovery path on opposite sides of the world. I completely did my left Achilles on Oct 29 playing volleyball and had surgery two days ago on Nov 5.

I was given two different meds to take, one a very strong codeine based one and the other just normal paracetamol. I have found the basic paracetamol works sometimes better than the stronger prescribed pain killer.

The morning blood rush to the foot is the real killer but it has to be done. I also have to give myself an injection once a day for the first 10 days which helps blood clots forming etc. Me and needles don’t go very well together but so far so good on this front.

There seams to be so many different approaches both in methods and timing for dealing with these type of injuries. The plan my doc has me on is 10 days in this back slab cast followed by a boot for 6 weeks and then physio from there.

This site is a life saver and having the chance to share stories with people like yourself makes the days go quicker and one step closer to recovery.
