Today is the first day that I have not used my crutches at all. 13 days ago I was NWB in a cast. So that makes it FWB in a boot @ 7.5 weeks post op. I see that a lot of people have experienced swelling, soreness, etc. I have had very little swelling or soreness. I haven’t taken any pain killers since two days post op. The Doc said I could sleep with out the boot, but I toss and turn a lot so I went and got a small plastic brace that lays on my shin and top of foot, Its held in place with an ACE bandage. Not sure it really does anything other than give me a piece of mind. I don’t go back to Doc for another 2.5 weeks, So all I have to do in the mean time is protect it with the boot and get better at walking.
FWB @ 7.5 weeks post op
6 Weeks Post Op.
I had my 6 week post op Doctors appointment today. NO more cast !!! I now have a walking boot. He told me to start putting weight on it slowly, over the course of the next month as I feel comfortable . This is both exciting and scary for me. I am VERY protective of my Achilles now, Ive read some of the stories of re rupturing it. The last thing I want to do is push it and start all over. I was told as long as I keep the boot on it will be protected, the boot also has no range of motion so my Achilles will is not being used yet. Anyways Ill keep you posted on the progress.
Day 12
I had my first post op Doctors appointment yesterday. I got the splint and ace bandages that had been on since surgery 12 days ago removed. He took a look at it, moved it a little and said looks good. He said he was pleased with how well he was able to reattach the tendon. I am sill NWB and have a fiberglass cast, Next office visit is in 4 weeks.
9 Days Post OP
Well its 9 days since surgery and things are going well. Low grade fever is gone now. Very little pain. Everyday gets a little better, I’m adjusting to using crutches, My Doc said i could use a knee scooter. So i picked one up at a loan closest. I have been using it around the house. It works so well i might start taking it with me when I leave the house. I cant say enough about how the scooter has made so many things a lot easier. I highly recommend one ( Please consult your doctor before you use one). I’m not the type of person to stay laying down all day. This poses a problem having my leg down, It does swell and get unconformable after 15-30 minutes So I elevate my leg as much as possible. If I go out, I either have my wife drive and I elevate, or I only drive somewhere if I know I wont be out long or I’m going to my office where I have A pillow on my desk that raises my ankle above my heart. I have my first post op appointment in 2 days, I believe he will put Hard cast on. I did have one kind of disturbing thing happen last night. I woke up to my calf kind of cramping or flexing , only for maybe 5-10 seconds but after it relaxed the area of my repair hurt for a little while. I have been so protective of the area. I hope it didn’t cause any damage to the repair. Has anyone else had anything like this happen?
Update Day 4 after surgery
well this is the 4th full day after surgery. First day was painful even with taking the Vicodin every 4 hours. Day 2 was spent being really sick from the Vicodin. After talking to the Doctor I switched to Ibuprofen. Day 3 has been the best so far. No pain and not sick. I probably did a little too much on this day. I went into the office intending to go only for a couple of hours. ended up spending most of the day there, with my foot on my desk. was very tired last night. Today day 4 No pain or nausea I went out in the morning for a little while, home with foot elevated for 3-4 hours, then back out again for a couple of hours. I have a low grade fever today 99.8 F not really sure if Ive had it or it just started, so I’m keeping an eye on that. My surgeon gave me a prescription for antibiotics that i have been taking. Has anybody else experienced a low grade fever 4 days after surgery?
1st Day Post Op
Hello Everyone, There is a lot of great information here, sure glad I found you guys.
I am a 46 yr old male, I completely ruptured my Achilles tendon playing soccer on Oct 28th, I had surgery yesterday Nov 2nd. So today is my first day post op. I have been taking pain meds every 4 hours since getting home. Even after having leg elevated & taking the double doses of Vicodin that my Doctor suggested It was still painful at times. From what Ive been reading this really bad pain only lasts a couple of days? Any input would be much appreciated.
