Partial weight bearing :) but no range of motion exercises?

Posted on August 30th, 2010 in Uncategorized by Brad

Just got back from my ortho.  He calls it three weeks,  I call it.  (The "lost" week is the first week, where I had an aircast with two wedges in.)

Went from a fiberglass cast at 20 degrees to the aircast with two wedges in heel.  Seems strange to "walk" but doesnt hurt.  Thompson test caused my affected foot to move slightly, which was good to see.

No exercises or mobility drills yet, and follow up visit  is 2.5 weeks, which would be 5.5 weeks "post op" without any strengthening or stretching (other than PWB as tolerated)

Seems kinda slow to me.  The operative rehab protocol from the same office has range of motion exercises and strengthening at two weeks.

I am getting concerned that my non-operative protocol is too conservative.

but it nice to stand on two feet again

Knee scooter / rollaround

Just yesterday I picked up a "roll-around" or Knee-scooter:  I will have a cast on until August 23rd, so my options are this, crutches or hopping on one foot.

As I work from home and we have all hardwood floors, I find it works quite well.

Even the feeling over covering 10-15 feet quickly and easily is nice, vs. the effort and speed of cruthches.

How long non-weight bearing (NWB)?

Posted on August 11th, 2010 in Uncategorized by Brad

Just got a cast (20 degrees plantarflexion) and have followup in 2 weeks. (ie cast instead of surgery)

If I get a second cast that would total 4 weeks NWB - is that too long?

Thanks

Hi everyone
Eight days ago I ruptured my left Achilles Tendon while playing softball. I rounded first, took another stride or two, then ‘pop’ and i was down on the dirt before my brain could process what happened.

For me, it felt like the earth under me just gave out, and I landed on my thigh and forearm.

The pain was not that bad, and I hopped off the field.

X-rays negative.

Initial Ortho visit seemed to indicate surgery.

Then I found this site and the recent articles (thanks Norm of the North!!) that suggested non-operative can be just as good.

Had an ultrasound: 7 mm gap at plantar flexion, 15 mm at neutral. For my ortho, that was within limits of what they allow for non-operative.

I now have a cast on at 20 degrees for the next two weeks. Not sure what the next step will be as I was unable to see my Doctor the day of the casting

Curious to gather thoughts on second cast after two weeks or move to removable/hingeable boot to allow mobilization.

Thanks for reading
