Up And Running…

Well not me, my blog :)
I am currently 4 weeks and 1 day post op. So here’s a quick run down on how when who what and why…
I ruptured my left achilles playing netball on April 22nd. I did the usual turn around to see who trod on the back of my shoe so I could knock that person out and there was no one there. Once I realised I coudn’t put any weight on it I knew there was something wrong..
After my first sick leave day in 8 years, more doctors appointments than I’ve been to in my life and a very expensive visit to an Orthopaedic Surgeon I was booked in for surgery on the 1st May. Thank god for private health insurance that I could get in so early - not so good for my bank account. Seeing as I have never been under the knife I was freaking out like you wouldn’t believe. I don’t know if it was the procedure itself or the reality of being out of action for so long…
Surgery was standard, I was awake in recovery an hour after I hobbled into the operating room. In at 4pm, home by 8pm in a half cast with a crap load of bandages. I stopped taking the pain medication 2 days later, finished the antibiotics 3 days later but I am still having to give myself a Clexane injection every day to prevent blood clots.
My first follow up appointment was 12 days later when I went back to get the stitches out. He is not very forthcoming with information and I didn’t ask many questions. Was told more come back in 4 weeks, still no weight bear, bring a pair of shoes that have a 25mm heel lift in both and sent me down the hall to see a physio (who has a cash only policy, I don’t carry cash…) to get a cam boot fitted. I have never paid so much money for one boot before!! From what I can remember it was set at 25 degrees and I was sent on my way..
And that’s that. I haven’t been back to work, have barely left the house. I just don’t have the energy. I really should have taken advantage of the time off and completed my assessments for night school, but I am the Queen of Procrastination…
So I am counting down to next Friday to see what the next phase of recovery is..whether it’s FWB in 2 shoes or PWB and still in the boot..I tell ya, I resent paying $170 for this boot if I am only going to wear it for 4 weeks!
Right, might be nap time….

boredgemin - Well done. You have a page up and running now you just have to add some time line widgets and personal details. Since you have plenty of time on your hands it will give you something to work out.

Up and running–that’s a great lead. How I wish I was up and running too. Getting around is a lot of work when NWB–four weeks and I’ve pretty much had enough. I can totally sympathize. I’m curious to hear what your next phase is too–seems like two shoes is a big step from NWB in the boot (but that’s just my uneducated opinion.)

Take it easy.

I am yet to figure out the widgets!!

Kelly - it sounds bizarre but the last 4 weeks have flown by but gone forever at the same time..2 shoes so soon does seem a little aggressive but I’ll find out next week if that’s the case. Considering I have put no weight (well maybe a little) on my left foot I am very hesitant for such a drastic change. I hired a knee scooter to assist with mobility but to be honest I haven’t used it all that much. Just relied on the crutches to get around the house.

Me too–re: the crutches. I think it would have been different if I had small children who needed picking up. Mine are too big for that these days. Keep us posted!

(You can find the widgets on the left side bar of your Wordpress page.)

Did you input your profile information where it asks for your date of injury, surgery, etc? I think that’s how I got mine to work.
