I wish I had found this site sooner!

October 21, 2008

I am so happy to see that this site exists.

I injured myself in August and am just weeks away from getting my boot off.  I can not wait to be free of this boot and to be able to drive again!!  My poor husband has been picking up the slack around home and with our two little boys.  He is chief cook and bottle washer these days, or rather, chief chauffeur, laundry personnel and personal assistant.  After many weeks he is getting close to the end of his tether.

    Bones98,

    Welcome to our family…unfortunately.
Read the blogs and make sure when the boot comes off you’re pushing your PT. What you do now will influence the next several months.
Good luck and let us know if you have any questions.

I hear you on that! My DH has been a gem. He even scrubbed and waxed the kitchen floors today in anticipation of some of my family coming in for the weekend. Our eldest is getting married Friday and he’s had to do most of the chores around here to get ready. He’s also been chauffeuring my 2 youngest to & from school and me to appointments when he can. Guess we owe our hubbies big time once we’re back up on our 2 feet! The bright side is I’m sure they are gaining a good measure of respect for what we do while they’re are work!

    Hey Bones,

Better late than never. We’rer all here sharing the highs and lows of ATR.
Don’t be afraid to asked the silliest questions about your recovery ie. pins and needles, tender heel, PT routines.

    Happy heeling,
    Jon

    Thanks everyone for the support!!

Jon, I was relieved to hear about the tender heel. My heel had been hurting after walking around in my boot and I thought I was nuts because I injured my achilles - so why now my heel … Thanks for the answer!

As of yet my doctor has not mentioned any PT. He has told me to take my foot out of my boot as much as I want and to move it in circles etc. What are anyone’s thoughts and what do you think about swimming?

    G’morning Bones,
My heel is still a little tender 6 weeks after cast removal but it is improving slowly.

As for swimming, I can now, but that was after 5 weeks of PT once I had full ROM and some strength back (2 shoes FWB). You should be okay if you are FWB, but just lake it gently….very gently.
The biggest issue I have is stairs…..it used to be so easy. My foot not loger flexes the same amount so descending stairs is a little slow and jerky but that too, like everything else with this injury will come back in time.

    Keep smiling,
    Jon

    Thanks Jon,

I think I am just getting antsy because I am getting my boot off soon. I am allowed to sleep without the boot on and in the morning it hurts a bit to put the boot back on.

Right now I can’t fathom being able to walk in shoes only. Do you go directly to shoes or is there some transition?

How long have you been FWB and what were the first few days like?

    Thanks for the advice
    Allison (Bones)

Bones: Thanks for your reply. I am 12 weeks post op and am in 2 shoes already. I am having trouble with my foot being cold all of the time not just after I have iced it. I have purchased those toe warmers for hunting but at this point I can only walk around in a pair of Crocs and the heat would be bad for the Crocs. I was just wondering if a cold foot was something others are facing as well.

How did your leg hold up for the wedding?
