from cast to shoes? what will they think @ the blog?

Well a weekend of anticipation to the 24th with my cast coming off after 6 weeks since surgury and not knowing what to expect ended up being a real surprise to me . So many different treatments I began to believe I had and old school Dr. and it would be months before I was 2 shoes. I went in this morning anxious to have the cast removed and let the leg breathe. They cut the cast and removed it and the leg looks a little smaller but all in all good. I sat there waiting for the Dr. to come in and have a look when his PA said you didnt bring a shoe? Huh for what? You didn’t say I need a shoe? I really was expecting a splint or a boot today not talk of a shoe.
He came in and manhandled my foot and said it looks good your healing nicely. I want you to slowly start walking in tennis shoes with a lift in each shoe . Ween yourself to 1 crutch by 10 days or so then you should be able to put full weight on next time I see you in three weeks. We will then decide if you need any PT. I was shocked I felt like the warden has said he cut my sentance to 1/2 term. I came home washed the leg for 20 minutes and drove to work . It felt so good to have the freedom of nothing binding the leg and letting the air hit it. I have spent the day slowly putting weight on it and kind of going thru the walking motion but with not much weight while I do that. I cant explain how big the corner I feel like I have turned.
Of course I was told not to push it and ROM isnt there yet but Im so happy that I feel like my doctor wants me on my feet as quick as I want to be. From conservative to aggressive and Im ok with it and thankful. The blog has been wonderful to learn and understand and get support from others going thru the same as you. It can be very calming to see that others have overcome what we feel is devistating. All of us were active before, this injury doesnt punish the lazy couch potato.
The doctor did say that he basically weaved a rope of thread to cover about 60 cm to put the tendon back together and it was like sewing spegetti. Maybe thats why he feels like it is strong enough but nevertheless I will be cautious for the remainder of the healing time. Thanks to all for good wishes and positive feedback. Not that Im all better, but today I feel that im on my way

boffo - Congrats on getting out of the cast. Glad to hear that you’ve started bearing some weight on your recovering foot. Are you going to be starting physical therapy? Keep us posted on your progress. Your incision scar looks pretty good.

Congrats! I love these posts! They are so encouraging to me. I’m still in my splint from the ER and awaiting a second opinion of my MRI before they decide on Surgery. I’ll know tomorrow at 11AM. Thank you for being an inspiration and letting us all know the successes.
I love this site.

hey congrats
i return to hospital on july 14th, my process is very similar to yours i’m 8 weeks in plaster then straight into shoes with crutches hoping i will be able to ditch the crutches as quick as possible, as far as i know i’ll be recieving PT pretty much straightaway. So true what you say same routine for the last 2 months work,home,dinner,t.v. Way too knackered to do anything else. Been shopping a few times, and to a couple of concerts BUT its so tiring wrecks you for the rest of the day too much hard work. good Luck with your progress
