Signs of Blood Clots

Posted by bennet on June 3, 2009

So my newest theory of the pain in my leg is that it may be a blood clot.  A quick google search on the symptons resulted in the following:

Symptoms may include the following:

  • Swelling
  • Gradual onset of pain
  • Redness
  • Warmth to the touch
  • Worsening leg pain when bending the foot
  • Leg cramps, especially at night
  • Bluish or whitish discoloration of skin

I have swelling.  I have gradual onset of pain.  I have redness.  I have warmth in the area.  I have worsening leg pain when bending the foot.  I have leg cramps, especially at night.  I have whitish discoloration of skin.

I emailed my surgeon today and he said blood clot is unlikely.  He said that there were no signs of blood clots when he examined me yesterday and that clots are usually NOT painful.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts?

Hi — my brother had a blood clot that was not diagnosed for about 2 weeks. He is fine, but he is on medications probably for life now. Not to worry you, each case is different.

Take a look at the bloggers named newleaf and sidmatt. Both of them report DVT. (I typed DVT into the search option, and voila.)

If your symptoms persist I would go back and see the doctor in person. Good luck. Keep us posted.

    Hey there Bennett,

hope everything is well and it is not actually a blood clot.I know you were taking blood thinners and have been PWB from almost the very beginning, surely with that much movement and circulation it would be very difficult for this to happen? Let us know how the doctor’s appointment goes, best of luck with it.

As for me, my 1920s Orthopod has me in a newer, shorter fibreglass cast that goes on the back of my leg and under my foot, keeping the foot at around 70% flex. It is a little tight on the tendon but otherwise much better than the “slab” I had on the front that went all the way to my knee. I have this on for 3 weeks (2 more to go) then into a boot with wedges. I almost fell backwards climbing some stairs (at the pub….oops) the other day, and had to weight bear a little on the toes of my bad foot. Very scary experience as it made the tendon burn a little, and really reinforced to me that I need to take this slowly, so I am happy with my conservative rehab program now!!

Quick question, can u please let me know the same of your doctor and physio? My physio wants to contact them to see how they got the boot with wedges, it seems he is having no luck through the BJ United.

    Cheers!

    Hi Tommo:

All things are back to normal… well sort of. After having 2 days of severe pain, it all went away. I’ve put one heel insert back into my boot and the dr also prescribed more anti-inflammatory drugs for me. Not sure if it was the heel insert or the drugs but the pain is gone.

So going to take out my heel insert today and see if the pain returns. If not, I guess I still need to be on drugs.

My surgeon was Dr Brockwell. He’s out of HK but comes to Shanghai twice a month to do surgeries. His clinic’s website in HK is http://www.asiamedical.hk/

Believe his profile is also on the SH United website as well.

My physio is Eric Yue at Sino United and their website is http://www.sinounitedhealth.com/

Good luck on finding those inserts.

Thanks very much Bennett, much appreciated.

perhaps the pain you were experiencing was from taking one of the inserts out before the tendon was ready for it? Putting one back in sounds like a smart plan, I am really coming to realise that you cannot rush this injury!!

Will let you know how the boot goes, needless to say I have another 2 weeks in my sexy new cast so I have plenty of down-time in which my wife can ponder how my boot can possibly match her handbag!

    Cheers

    Hi again Bennett,

sorry to hassle you again, my physio wants to know whether it was your Surgeon (or the United Hospital) or the Physio that got the boot for you??

    Cheers mate

    Tommo
