W29 - Snowboarding Holiday

Published by bcurr at 1:05 am under Uncategorized

Just a quick post to say that my snowboarding holiday went without a hitch.

Achilles feels superb and I managed to hit all the major types of runs as well as doing park stuff (yay for learning 360s off kickers)

Hope everyone is recovering well.  Roll on Thursday when I should make my long awaited return to playng football (soccer to my US cousins).

Super report Barry. Can’t tell you how glad I am to hear it went so well for you. Gives me hope that I might get back on my snowboard too before too long ;-)

Barry, you continue to be an inspiration to those following and I think your pages should be a must read for all the new comers. The message is simple. Life will return to normal if you are patient and do the right things. My other tendon has been giving me some grief of late but I put it down to all the ladder work and heavy lifting up the ladders. Had a 26ft ridge beam to put up the other day. Got most of the way up with ropes but still had to lift the last foot up the ladder with it on my shoulder. Ryan, there was not rating on this ladder. It took 5 hours to get it into position (with breaks). Haven’t heard much from Daisy of late. Assuming she is busy with the ballet. Hope she is well. It is sunny and hot in this part of the world so reading about all that cold stuff makes we long for winter here. We will only be 20 minutes from snow (back country). Just hoping we have some heating installed before the winter hits. All the best.

Way to go, Barry! Are you a soft-boot user? With my hard ski boots, I had no AT problems skiing Whistler at 17 weeks post-non-op. That was almost 2 yrs ago, details on my blogs. Doing it again a yr ago, 9 weeks after open-heart surgery (aortic valve replacement) was WAY more challenging, but it worked, too. This week I’m back again, skiing Whistler w/o thinking too much about either rehab — and getting Seniors discounts, too! :-) Time to hit the slopes…

ryanb, saw your video … ouch … though it didn’t look as bad as a few of my epic falls, thankfully other body parts took the brunt of that!

rome24kr, I see no problems in returning by mid-august, that gives you 7 months still to go!

Stuart, same here with the other tendon. Can’t work out whether its just being more aware/paranoid or what. My physios advice was to do regular foam roller exercises to get the blood moving about etc and it does seem to have helped.

norm, not too up on ski boots but I would have thought your softest boot was way harder than a boarders hardest boot. On the 1-9 scale, my boot is around a 5-6 so still has a lot of flex but not as much as my old ones!

Bcurr, I know little re sb boots, but I thought the ones used with carving/racing boards were +/- = ski boots. No?

My ski week kept getting better. Love Whistler, love beating myself up on the slopes w/o thinking “clinical” thoughts, & can’t wait to return in March! On day 5, we had fresh snow & full sun, & I returned to my fave steep-&-deeps for the first time in almost 3 years - over and over! “Only” did about 17500′ vertical — but very strenuous stuff — before I was whipped. :-) last day I skied 90% groomed. Much easier. Did 23,500′ which felt just right.

Part of me regrets that I read all your wisdom about muscle-building, because a “brutal” ski week seems to break all the rules, and I kept thinking about them!

Oops! Just realized that the wisdom about muscle-building came from Ryan, not you! (And ANOTHER effect of advancing age is loss of memory — or did I already mention that? ;-) )
