achilles rupture while playing badminton

hi all
first of all nice to see so many people suffering from this and recovering to in my case being workin in remote areas of andman and nicobar islands, when i got ruptured on 15 july while playing badminton.i was rushed to hospital as there was no ortho spl case was seen by surgical spl and USG was done ,but radiologist told that ot was sprian abd surgeon was clueless.he wrapeed me in plaster and called me after one week.after 1 week repeat USG done and radiologist is worried this time as he says that he is partial tear in USG,recommended me to go for MRI.I was transferred to bangalore next day in morning ortho spl saw me and 2 sec he told me that you have got complete rupture and to confirm it MRI to be done .within hour MRI was done .It shows complete rupture 6 cm above the calcaneum and 9 mm space in between.Very next day i was operated upon,as diagnosis is delayed by 2 weeks, doc told me that during operation both ends are shredded and tied and reinforced it with plantaris muscle. After that i was plaster for 2 weeks with non weight bearings.Exactly after 2 weeks sutures are cut (it was staplers) and put me Cam walker boot with 30 angle and told me to reduce it 10 degrees every week and increase wweigt bearin to full at the end of 6th week but my scar is open at the middle and again i have to go for repeated dressings .At last at the end of 4th week it was completely healed.I was against the doc advice to early wt bearing and started takin weight at the end of 6th week in walker with crutchus

I have to admit, I had to look up Andaman and Nicobar islands, they look like stunningly beautiful places. If you have to have an ATR, at least you are in Paradise while you heal up. Take care and get better every day.

    Hi there

it won’t be too long til you are back in the water, though its not a good idea to wear fins for a while, and when you do, start with very short ones! The biggest problem is getting to the water….shuffling along the sand on your backside possibly (I have done it…if you figure out a better way please let me know!).

Sounds like we are on the same kind of timeline…I am 6 weeks 2 days post op, in the boot at neutral, going to surgeon today to have it put past neutral. I am weight bearing as tolerated which means for me, one or no crutches around the house, two crutches when I am out and about.

I really really really wanted to get to the Andaman Islands when I was in India about 8 years ago but I ran out of money :( perhaps one day….

Take care and best of luck!!!

    hi ruth,
thanks for support.actually i hav tried with small fins but not able to go down as i felt scary as my legs were not moving properly and i am 18th week post op,still limping rightly pointed out it is very dangerous to move in sand with ur heel.i always walk with high shoes on.earlier i havent got time to posted me on this website.i will now keep updating u got injured and make sure to come to visit Andaman

    Hey there

I injured my leg dancing, on my birthday! I was having so much fun right up until the fateful ‘pop’!!

I have started swimming again recently and you are right, it’s very tough going. I got in the pool with a kickboard and started kicking, not too hard but it should have been enough to move - NO!!! I did not move forward an inch!!! It’s going to take some time to re-train the muscles I guess, but the way I look at it, the more work I put in to doing things the right way, the stronger, faster and better I will be than before!!

ONE DAY I will visit Andaman, I swear!!!
