12 weeks post op! Trying to walk again
Ok see i’m 12 weeks post op this wednesday. I have been in cast NWB, then in Boot NWB, then in Boot PWB and have been in elevated sneaker for a week weight bearing. So my walking is pathetic and hard to have a normal walk . my ankle area swells especially later in the day and there is mild pain not horrible but certainly discomfort. I am seeing OS this week and will have my first PT. Does anyone have any suggestions for 3 months in . I have been using coco butter on achilles and have elevated my leg when not walking. I use some ice also which seems to help with the swelling. Im am excited to see a PT. getting one step(no pun intended) closer to normalcy.

Hi Arib, the swelling and difficulty walking sound normal. You’re doing the right thing elevating and icing. I found that a bucket of water kept in the fridge was an excellent way to ice my foot. I’d just take it out the fridge and then put my whole foot in all the way up passed the ankle for 8min. Super cooling for the whole foot. It’s painful though - very cold, you won’t want to leave it in the full 8min.
I listed all the exercises I was doing on my 13 week post, but I recon it’s safer to see your PT first and find out what stage you’re at and what you’re ready for. For walking what really helped me was to hold onto something for support then step onto the injured foot heel first then as I brought the uninjured foot across make sure I rolled all the way through the foot so that the last thing to leave the ground was the toes. Still holding on repeat but backwards, so step back onto the injured foot making sure toes touch first and then roll all the way through so the last thing to leave the ground is your heel. Then go forward again, back again, etc. My PT had me do it in front of a mirror to make sure my ankle didn’t roll and hips stayed aligned. I’d do it 3/4 times a day, at least 30 reps each time. Straight after I’d practise walking trying to use the same technique. You should be safe trying this, but I would hate if you tried and hurt yourself, so I still think wait for PT and let that guide you.
First off I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I’ve had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out.
I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted simply just trying to figure out
how to begin. Any recommendations or tips?
Thank you!
