Hi, Mark! I am now 8 months post rupture, and doing well with life, though now it is my wife who is recovering from foot surgery. Of course, she isn’t making all the mistakes I made.

Pozaicer, Dancing is great (my daughter dances for a company), there is no better thing than finding the beauty in movement. How bad can rehab be if you dance it?

Metonia, Take your time and you won’t get out of breath. The next choice, is always, just one step. How hard can one step be?

I see a direct connection between climbing a mountain and the rehab process. If I look up at the summit, far off in the distance my reaction is, “Wow, that is a long way, how can I make it?”
The answer is, I don’t have to make it.
All I need to do is take one step.
And then then another step.
By finding the value in each step, I forget about the summit, until the moment arrives where I realize that I am standing on it saying, “How did that happen?”
So, my suggestion would be, forget about progression, just take one step (the exercises plus ice), then do it again, then do it again.

Pozaicer, now that I’m past my medication almost killing me, the pool is getting easier. I’m optimistic I will get back to my “pre-surgery” pool state soon.
The land exercises are not progressing as fast as I would like but that’s just my impatience to be better after declining for such a long time.

Let me verify though: You are one year past the achilles tendon rupture, AND 17 weeks past FHL tendon surgery? On the same leg? Wow….

thanks for this update, it sounds absolutely fantastic! very well done on the progress.
i came out of the boot two days ago and walked 1.5 miles that day, it felt weird but liberating.
i can’t lift myself on toes with neither one nor two feet yet, only in the water. i had a wee stint at dancing the day i went to shoes, and it feels surprisingly good! i know i have to take it easy for the first 4 weeks so i go over the magic 12 weeks of high risk of re-rupture but i can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Mark, this is fucking great, an honest take on ATR and recovery. Wish i had your stamina, even though i’m just short of half your age. I”m in the boot at present, 22 days since full rupture, and i’m a non-op.
can’t wait to be in the pool at week 6 and then hit the sauna, haven’t done ice at all but again i don’t get swelling and i have good circulation.

Hey Mark, this is definitely not the moment when you won’t be able to do what you want to do! You’ll be climbing with your daughter in no time! It sounds like the doctors have done an excellent job with your FHL transfer and that you’re making an excellent recovery and you’re certainly very determined to stay active. Good luck and keep us posted!
True comment about places in NYC you can walk to, but then again, I miss my weekly visits to a mountain valley where I would relax, drink from the natural spring, pick an eat fruit, and use a machete to keep the trails open…
NYC is fine for walking, but I like the company of nature and wildlife when I need to relax. 
On the other hand, I know I am not as brave and relilient as you are! LOL

By mistake I posted a reply to you on Housemusic’s page… ah, but we are all the same community.
I love your spirit, and as a fellow 62 yr old who is aggressively recovering my freedom of movement, including dancing, I can only envy your having a pool and mountain trails to enjoy. Having returned to NYC 16 yrs ago, those activities are rare and prized events.
All I can say is just keep on having fun!

Your post made me smile - I like your fighting spirit and it sure is what will help ensure a speedy but safe recovery!
I don’t need to go over my story you can do that yourself on my blog, but my attitude was similar to yours and I can safely say that 19 months on ~ other than my calf still being very slightly smaller I or anyone else would never know what I had been through! I am back to all sport and outdoor adventures probably even more than before, have done some pretty tough challenges and the old Achilles has served me well. You def have to challenge the Achilles (safely) to make it all stronger, the stronger it gets the more you do.
I wish you and all other ATR’s well and a good recovery, it does take time but you will return to life as you knew it but with much more appreciation for your body and even more hunger to live a full and adventurous life!!!!
