NHS Treatment Plan
Although this page is still under construction, please feel free to post any questions, queries, comments regarding UK NHS Treatment. I have been posting up my experiences to date, click to go to Week 1 of my blog.
I sustained an achilles tendon rupture in November 2012. I am being treated at my local hospital in Hampshire, England. Fortunately my injury, initial diagnosis and consultation with the orthopaedic consultant all happended within 48 hours.
I decided to go the non-surgical (Conservative treatment) route as I did not want the surgical risks (scar, infection, nerve damage and other complications) and was willing to trade these off against the non-surgical concerns (longer recovery, higher re-rupture risk and possible lower ultimate strength).
Although going non-surgical was not a difficult decision, it was difficult making the decision not to follow the slower rehabilitation protocol suggested by my hospital consultant. In the end I have followed an accelerated path but not as aggressive as the UWO style accelerated protocols extensively discussed and supported by others online.
I only spent 1 day in a temporary cast and have been in a VACOped boot the rest of the time. For information on the ski boot style VACOped click this link : Using a VACOped Boot
