9 Week Post-op - First PT Session
Posted by airzoomy on April 9, 2009
Today was a great day. I’ve been on 2 shoes for almost 2 weeks and now I got my first PT session. After being evaluated, it looks like I have a LOT of stretching and strength training to do. Great news that I’ll be able to join a gym to do some stuff I haven’t done in months.
Though, I do hate gyms as I feel they’re scams (Xplore Fitness), but I think I’m going to join Ballys since I can get on my girlfriend’s account.
Basic stretches: Calf stretch with bend, calf raises, ankle stretch with rubber band.
I believe PT sessions are well worth the time for recovery
I hope to be jogging in 4 weeks!

Hi Airzoomy–I’m right there with you–I’m at 1O weeks. Just started PT a week ago and I’m all for it. Every time I leave my PT my AT feels way better, I’m walking better and have renewed motivation to keep working on stretching and strength training exercises. It’s good to see progress as well. I’m getting full treatments of ultrasound, STEM, biking, stretching, massage, and some new thing where they scrape your scar with a metal tool?? not sure how much it good it does but I’ll take anything they can throw at me at this point. Good luck on your full recovery and getting back to running! My goal it to be back on riding my mountain bike on some sweet single track by June!

Bode: The scraping with a metal tool thing is called Graston. It works wonders on scar tissue. Hurts like crazy when they are doing it and I usually bruised afterwords but I always got a lot more mobilty after I had it done. A set of those metal tools here in the US costs around $3,000. Ouch!

Graston…good to know, I’ll bring that up to my PT next Tuesday, and I hoping to get the full treatment Bode has been getting.
After my first day, I did all the stretches and actually played 30 minutes of Wii Fit. I feel I can walk better now but still have a slight limp. Hopefully after a week of this I’ll be walking normal.
I’m joining ballys today, which exercise machine should i do first?
By the way, the best wii mini game that’s good for balancing and stretching around the AT is the marble in the hole game! I felt good work around my left AT.
Good luck all.

Airzoomy: You can google Graston Technique and get all kinds of information on it. Interesting stuff.
Thanks for the tip on the best Wii fit games to play for rehab. My family has been wanting to get it for me but I was wondering how helpful it would be. Does it do enough to be worth the $70. I have been playing a lot of Wii lately but I have played Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, and a possible new addiction to The Tank Game.

Spent the Friday night at Ballys and it felt great…and I will ask about Graston at my next PT since I did google it and it seems to be a great way to help get rid of my scar tissue.
Smish: As for the Wii Fit, I bought the Wii system and Wii Fit the day after I ruptured my AT knowing I’ll need it. 2 months later, I was able to start my Wii Fit games.
Basically, if you can get it for $70, it’s well worth it. I bought it retail at $90. As for the game, it’s a must have for Wii owners! It complements the rehab workouts, but in no way replace the rehab and PT sessions. The Wii Fit mini games, especially the ski, marble in the hole and the ski jump are great since you can track your progress and you can feel your AT/ankle stretching and working. The Yoga and Strength training are great as well because if you just treat it like a game you want to improve everytime you play, your AT and the rest of your body will improve over time!
