Stupid, scary blood clot

February 20th, 2017

So I ended up in the ER last Friday night (after therapy and a call to my ortho about my swelling in which he told me to go directly to urgent care) with a positive ultrasound result of a blood clot. The doctors, after hours of sitting in that triage room, told me to take full aspirin (325mg) everyday for 30 days, and have a follow up ultrasound this week. I’m taking all the necessary steps, but I’m kind of freaked out. The blood clot is in my lower leg and the doctors have said those typically don’t propagate (that’s why no blood thinners), but still I don’t know if I should exercise as I normally do or if I do too much (like housework or taking my walks around the office to keep mobile) and get a little out of breath, is that the result of the blood clot? I have a doctor’s appointment with my regular physician in the morning and am trying to get a follow up ultrasound scheduled as directed by the ER doctor. I’m trying to remain calm, but I’m a little freaked out. Anybody else have any experience with this after your ATR surgery? What happened?

Oh no! I guess the main thing is that they found it. Sounds like you’re being looked after, so hopefully just a temporary set-back :) I’m sure there’ll be others here who can advise.

So sorry to hear that! Good thing you found it and treating it now. I am only 15 days post-op and my surgeon put me on an oral anticoagulant (Xarelto) immediately after. After the ultrasound was clear at my first follow-up (Day 11), I then switched to 81mg aspirin twice a day - not sure for how long. I just read your other posts - do you think being at work full time is not allowing you to elevate properly? Hope you continue to heal well.

How did it go with the physician?

Hi morcs! Things went well. I had a follow up ultrasound and it hasn’t grown and hasn’t moved so that’s a good thing. It will be nice to hear its dissolved!

    Hi hopeful!

I was on an aspirin immediately following my surgery for 30 days and I took it faithfully. Still ended up with this thing. Elevating on a trash can at work doesn’t really help because its certainly not above my heart, but what can you do? I’m just following my doctors instructions and trying to move every hour to keep my circulation going.

I have the same thing - just diagnosed today, also on aspirin only (325 per day since before surgery). I am only 2 weeks post-op from ATR repair. I am completely freaked out.

Hi Amanda. I’m sorry to hear you’re dealing with the same thing. Kind of makes me feel like it’s a set back in my recovery and that’s disappointing and frustrating. Has your doctor given you any other instructions? I have another ultrasound this week. I’m praying mine will have dissolved by then.
