Thanksgiving Day Update 5 weeks 2 days Post Op!

November 26th, 2009

As I sit here doing my 3rd set of exercises for the day, I thought I would do an update. I have been PWB for almost 2 weeks and feel like I will get to FWB in the next few days. I feel like it will help if I can get rid of my heel lift so I look forward to seeing my DR. on Monday and seeing what he thinks of that plan. I was really hoping to try driving this weekend but think I will postpone that until I am comfortably FWB. I have had to really ramp up my icing and elevating now that I am putting so much weight on my foot. I wonder if that is normal? My PT really wants me to try to get a shoe on my foot and to wear my shoe when I ride the bike (20 minutes 3-5 times per week). He suggest running shoes or cowboy boots. I don’t have cowboy boots and my running shoes are old and feel super tight so I may go out and buy a new pair maybe a 1/2 size larger than normal. Or does anyone have another suggestion for that 1st shoe? Sort of scary and sort of exciting to imagine 2 normal shoes on my feet!!! I hope everyone in the US had a nice Thanksgiving and the rest of you had a nice day!

cheers,
Catherine

Congratulations!! I find myself a bit jealous as I will be 5 weeks post op on Monday, and I’m just barely PWB, and won’t be FWB for at least 3.5 more weeks. What kind of exercises are you doing? Have you started PT yet? My doctor told me I could do light ROM once or twice a day, but I’m hoping to talking him into letting me do a little more when I go back in a week and a half.

Catherine, I’m 6 weeks 2 days since surgery and am now wearing asics gel running shoes (kahana)on both feet. These are new shoes and very comfortable. You may need to go a 1/2 size larger, I didn’t, but my left foot is already a little smaller than my right so it worked out. I found a 1 inch foam heel wedge insert that I placed in my left shoe. It really helps to have that little bit of give in the heel as we are trying to get our motion back. I think you will still find you are walking with your bad foot always way out front and you won’t be able to bend your knee much as you walk at first either. I have only just started PT (2 visits) and the exercises are really helping me, but it is still a very slow and steady progress. I can’t imagine even thinking about pulling on an off a cowboy boot (what was he thinking) I would not even consider trying one on if I were you. As long as you don’t expect to walk any better in shoes than you do in the boot, you won’t be disappointed. Putting a shoe on will not make your ankle bend forward. Only alot of PT, ice and time will get us there. Good Luck! Paulette

    Hi Catherine,
Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving! I thought I already replied to you but since I don’t see my post I’ll try again:) When I’m not wearing my brace, I wear slip-on sneakers that have an open back (kind of like a clog). They are from Easy Spirit. I started wearing them in the house too. When I’m wearing the boot I wear either a platform flip-flop or heeled boot to even out my legs.
I don’t see my PT until Tuesday and wondered what kind of exercises your PT has you doing?
    Take care,
    Emily

Congratulations, Catherine! So happy to hear things are moving along a positive track for you! I’ve learned with an injury of this magnitude, there is SO much room for error, setbacks, and complications……however, from the sounds of it, its full-steam ahead for you, with the light at the end of the tunnel fully illuminated! Continued best wishes on your recovery. Ciao……Stroh BTW…..I updated my blog, things here are moving along swimmingly! :)
