Pain in my calf?

October 31st, 2009

I am now 11 days post op! For the past 2 days, when I elevate my leg and then lower if, I get a pain, almost like a cramp in my calf. It feels like I need to stretch it or massage it to make it go away. Does anyone else get that?

Thanks!

Its ironic you say that…….since you and I seem to be on the same track here……I was experiencing the same thing for the past few days. It seems to be waning now, but it was a very acute pain, mostly in the mornings, after waking up. I called my surgeon’s office and they said it could be stemming from a couple things….1.) dehydration and/or 2.) muscle atrophy, since the muscle hasn’t been stretched, exercised, or used in over a week and a half. I’ve been drinking a lot (of water….haha) over the past day and a half and the pain has subsided. I’ll be in to see them on Tuesday (you too!), so I’ll address it further at that time if I need to. Hope all is well your way……and Happy Halloween! Ciao…….Stroh

3littleones…Wierd that you say that, I’m 16 days post-op and I had the same pain around the 11 day post op day like yourself (see my post “What’s that feeling?”)… I went in to have it checked out because like you I had this pain when I got up to start for my day when I put my leg down and it too felt like a cramp. A really bad one at that. It felt at first like it was right behind my knee but after feeling for a little bit more it was really more at the very top of my calf. Not to scare you but the doctor sent me to radiology to get an ultrasound to rule out the possibility of a blood clot. Found out it wasn’t and he explained it’s more of muscle strain from the limb being positioned at a certain angle so long and then repositioned at a different angle. I still some slight discomfort but it has gone down quite a bit since then and I’ve noticed that stretching my leg as best as I can throughout the day helps alot.

3 littleones - re. calf pain - I had a bit of that, generally crampy, not too painful but enough to make me want to wiggle my fingers down the back of the cast and massage it (which I could sort of do if I lay on my back with my leg straight up). I called it “pissed off leg syndrome” because I’m pretty sure that’s what it was! Smoley

    Hi 3littleones!
My story is pretty much parallel to yours- I was playing in a match and about an hour into it I hear the horrific “SNAP”. I too am active, and was completely shocked to have this happen! No pain in my achilles ever. I got the knee scooter and even went trick-or-treating with my kids but I only lasted an hour- it was just too bumpy and my knee hurt after awhile. I’ve been going out to dinner/parties but of course am sitting most of the time with my leg propped up on the scooter and has to be around 2 hours or less.
I had the feeling I was going to get a calf cramp a few times too and I’ve been trying to flex my calf muscle to “work it out” a bit. I also massage my calf and it seems to help. -Emily
