8 days post op

October 28th, 2009

Hmmm… I am in much less pain so am doing much more during the day, but the nights are tough. I have been getting this weird pressure on the top of my foot and the back of my lower calf. Is this just the swelling from doing too much? SHould I be lying around more doing nothing? It is so hard to balance - or figure out how to balance - recovery.

Personal opinion…but I believe the more you keep your foot elevated and the less you do during the day the better you are…at least for the first 2 weeks.

The pressure or tightness of the cast is most likely a result of swelling.

I know it is tough when you want to do things for others, but maybe this is a time when others should totally be doing for you.

I hear you…….the nights are certainly the toughest, keeping my leg on the pillow(s) seems to be a much more daunting task than originally expected. I’m 11 days post-op (my surgery was on October 18)…so you and I are along the same path of dates. I get my stitches out/first cast off on November 3 (same date as you, I believe). I’ve found it exceptionally difficult to just “lie around”…..but when it comes to making positive strides in early recovery, it’s probably for the best….*sigh* Best wishes in your recovery……Stroh

3littleones - I’m a home-maker mum so I know exactly how frustrating it is to watch everything turn to chaos around you. No-one has any clean socks, the kids haven’t seen a vitamin for days and you can’t find anything in all the mess. But sounds like you are still swelling up and that is bad news for your overall recovery. If you can hang on in there for a few more days of doing as little as possible you’ll soon be able to do much more without swelling up, at least that has been my experience. Take care!

3littleones- I have been able to keep my foot up for the first 5 days, but everything changes tomorrow. I am going to a wedding shower in the morning (although I should be able to put my foot up once there), and then I promised I would take the kids around at least one block trick or treating. On Sunday I am selling beer at the Packer game for my kid’s daycare (they have a stool for me to sit on). On Monday I go back to school. Although I am really looking forward to a little more normalcy, I am not looking forward to what that will mean to my nights. I hear you on all accounts, and I’m hoping that my putting my foot up between ventures I can ease the swelling as much as possible.
