I’ve just joined the club

October 20th, 2009

Hi.  I am 41 and now that I am not nursing and I have finally gotten pretty close to a good weight and fitness level after the up and down roller coaster of 3 pregnancies I was really enjoying playing more tennis.  I love, love, love playing tennis!  I also run, do yoga, ski, hike and bike.  I was running for a drop shot on the court (had been playing for 1+ hour, was completely warmed up) when I heard the most horrfic noise as I flew to the ground.  Instinctively, I just knew exactly what I had done even though I had never heard it could happen just “doing” - I thought you had to get whacked in the heel or something to blow your AT!

In injured myself on a Friday and had the surgery on a Tuesday (today) so am glad that the recovery period has officially started.  Thank goodness for all of you and your fun entries and advice, I have a feeling this is going to be my lifeline!

Well, I am sure I will write more soon, but just wanted to start my blog.  I know I will have many many questions and I am really anxious to get mobile quickly since I am a mom of 3 and my kids go to 2 different schools both far from our home so I do a huge amount of driving.  This now means I am hugely dependent on a lot of help from friends and family and I want to start paying them back asap!

Welcome to the club 3 little ones… I understand exactly where your coming from when you wondered if it can even happen like that.. That sound that I heard is going to be a sound that I will never forget and at the same time hope that I never hear again LOL… Also there goes our skiing (i snowboard) this winter. I was looking so forward to it this winter but it looks more likely that I’m gonna have to keep the board put away for another year :( Well I look forward to your future posts and you’ll see just like I do that conversating with everyone and sharing stories on here makes the time fly by…Sometimes I even forget what happend until of course I look down HAHA…

3littleones - Bummer indeed. Welcome to the club, there has been quite a batch of new arrivals recently!
Sorry to hear of your injury, I did mine playing tennis too, very similar circumstances - playing for a while, nice and warm, forward for a shot - TWANG! Plop to ground!
How old are your kids? This could be a great time to train them up to help around the house a bit.
You’ll find loads of support and useful info on this site. Personally I think we are collectively better informed than most of the medical profession.
Once the first couple of weeks is passed (during which you need to take it really easy and rest and elevate as much as possible), get yourself something to help you get about at home rather than crutches (an invention of Satan himself surely). My personal choice is a wheely office chair, others have a knee-scooter and seem to love them. You’ll be amazed how resourceful you can be when you have to be.
    Hang on in there!

Just wanted to touch base with you to give you some hope. I am also a 41 year old mom and ruptured my AT snowboarding almost 8 months ago (my profile on this site is sehrlich). I am also very active, teaching spin and yoga classes and snowboarding, mountain biking and hiking. Although coming back from the surgery was very challenging, I feel like I’m stronger for it. I was able to stay in shape while in the boot by doing the rowing machine with one leg (very challenging!) and lifting weights, doing ab work, etc. I am now pretty much 100% (I can run, jump rope, etc) and looking forward to snowboarding again next month. My kids, who are 8 and 9, were actually fairly helpful during the recovery (they are very good at fetching stuff!) and my husband and friends were amazing. I also couldn’t drive for 6 weeks, which was tough. Good luck and feel free to contact me with any questions.
