Newly injured seeking advice

July 25, 2011 | |

I recently tore my achilles while at the gym “doing the right thing” with my trainer when I heard the haunting “pop” and felt the kick behind me.  Needless to say this is the  most inconvenient thing that has ever happened to me.  My job is not all that understanding — even though I work at a hospital.

I’m due for my post-op this week and I am terrified of being in a cast.  Has anyone ever gone from post-op to a weight bearing boot?  Is that possible?  I’m kinda freaking out over this whole thing…

I had my op, 2 weeks in a sort of cast (hard back, bandages around and then moved to a boot and told I could bear as much weight as I felt comfortable with. Fortunately for me I’ve had next to zero pain so have been able to fully weight bear since moving to the boot.

From what I can tell though this is considered progressive even with the cast phase as the first 2 weeks should be completely none weight bearing.

I’m sure someone with more experience may know a better answer though, but until then you know mine :-)

I work in an OR and went back to work within 2 weeks of surgery. If you are placed in a CAM boot, the bottom is very slick especially on wet hospital floors. Get some shoe stick/grip to put on the bottom of the boot and the bottom of your crutches. I am really sorry you busted your achilles. Ironically, the hospital environment is one of the tougher places to heal. I know.

I think I may have ruptured my at but the pain isn’t that bad and I can bear weight on it… jst can’t push with the foot very well at all…. what should I do? Is the pain intense? Shouldn’t I know if I have torn something??

Seth, get it checked out. In my case lack of pain was not an indication there was no problem. I kept passing the Thomson test but this is because I had a partial tear. Hope this makes sense.

1Shutinathlete, sorry you have joined the ‘club nobody wants to join’ but you will find a lot of advice and support on this site. All the best for a full healing.

seth , this is exact replica of my pre ATR pain like you thought it would be ok , went to docs who treated me for poss infection. to my peril when anti biotics didnt work i just put up with the pain , like you say could weight bear but limped on push off 4 week later and a slight trip on the back steps with somthing in my hands and bang . now in my second cast for ATR 6 and half weeks in , now know the limp and inabilty to push off were a tear in achilles that i never got checked - yours sounds same - insist on check up with doc and ultra sound which will id it if it is as suspected , good luck , dont ignore this cos i did and paid the price!!
