Aye yi yi! I really did it this time…
Hi folks!
My name is Shannon and I am currently nursing my Achilles’ tendon back to health. On June 1 I tore the the tendon while dancing. On June 5 I underwent surgery to repair the injury. Ever since I have been planted on the sofa or in bed - it has been the longest week ever. When i found the AchillesBlog I felt both relief and fear. Reading through the blogs I was able to glean much more information than the hospital had given me about the injury and also found solace reading through other people’s stories…. I intend to use this blog as a tool to track my healing and also to wade through the psychological complications that the injury has caused.

So you’re about a week out now? Hope you are feeling well. I know for me, at a week, I wasn’t taking the pain meds as often and I was able to maneuver around the house better. Trust me- time flies! I cannot believe I have already been off work for 7 weeks. My saving grace up until last week when I was allowed to start walking again was my knee scooter. I was able to go to stores with my husband and not be stuck inside all day. Good luck!!

Yes, exactly one week today. I think that I am having much difficulty now because my cast is so big and awkward. It goes 1/2 way up my thigh and is slightly bent. I hope that they will put me in a cast that goes to my knee on Monday.
Thanks for the encouraging words. How long will you be out of work? Even 2 days after the surgery I was thinking that I would be back at work next week but reality has set in as the week has gone on. I cried all day sun/mon as I started realizing all of things I cannot do. Now at midweek I am starting to recognize the things I can do.
Good luck with your healing

@1shann, surprising to hear your cast goes up so high. Guess I’m not sure, but I thought mine was common, it ended below my knee.
I’ve been out of work for 8 weeks as of tomorrow myself.. My job entails walking and carrying items. On my feet 95% of the day walking or standing. 60% pay for another 1 1/2 months then down to 0%… so I can’t wait to be healthy again..

I am not certain why the cast is so large. The surgeon did say that keeping the entire leg immobile would keep it safe from bumps and falls… I also had tix to see my favorite band on Saturday (had the tix for many months in advance)- I was determined to go and the doc knew my plans and gave me the green light to go in a wheelchair. Needless to say, I was not in the mood for 6 hours in the car and a crowded & bumpy outdoor scene 3 days after surgery.
I just found out I may be eligible for 60% pay as well…if so, I will feel much more at ease and can concentrate more on healing rather than worrying.
Good luck with your healing journey
