Easily Exhausted

October 3, 2011

It’s only 6 days post surgery, and I’ve been good about keeping my leg up unless I’m moving about and there’s been precious little of that. However, when I do even the smallest things like making breakfast and emptying the dishwasher, I finish these arduous activities exhausted. ¬†Yeah I understand at 56 I have less energy then 26 but I’ve always been an active person.

So, is a sudden and stunning lack of stamina a typical result of surgery and healing?

Absolutely. Your body’s is working very hard to recover, and has been through hell. What you’re experiencing is to be completely expected, and is no cause for concern. It will probably be a few weeks before you’re feeling like yourself again.

Have to agree. You are probably getting around on crutches still which takes an extra effort on muscles that may not be used to it. You can’t bend down like you normally would and when you do you have to support yourself in an unusal way. General anaesthetic takes a while to get out of your system completely as well. Are you on your own? That would be the only way I would empty the dishwasher at this early stage. Once I ditched the crutches I started to get into some household chores but still found I had to rest more.

Thanks for the feedback. Luckily my wife keeps telling me to get off my feet (crutches actually). Forgot about the effects of anaesthetic and an achy leg on stamina.
